“Nice hotel for business, not families”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2011

The Mayflower Hotel is a beautiful hotel from another era. We spent three nights there while attending a three day meeting. The hotel works for business but not for families. There were many functions on the first floor - meetings, luncheons, dinners. The room was large and updated, but not modern. There was no view - could only see the air conditioning system outside our window. There were two double beds in the room, but only one chair. We would rate the comfort of the bed a B-. There was no free wifi in the room - which was very aggravating. We brought our new ipad with us, but had to go to the lobby to use it, unless we wanted to spend $15 a day - which we didn't. The entrance - which includes a breakfast/coffee bar that becomes a regular bar in the evening - desparately needs updating. The furnishings are old and soiled. We went down the street for a drink, because the bar was so unappealing. Drinks were also quite expensive. The concierge service was almost non-existent. They begrudgingly gave us pamplets, if we asked, but did not offer any real help or ideas. We stayed with a group, but when we tried to book another room on our own, the mid week rate was over $600. Clearly this hotel is for the business traveler on an expense account - not for a family on vacation.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel.

I traveled to DC several times in the past year on business and was lucky enough to get a room at the Mayflower while I was there. The hotel is fabulous! Everything was clean and up to date. The room too was exceptional. I was lucky to be comped into a suite. The antique reporduction furnishings gave the suite a real authentic feel. I recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the DC area.

Started our trip here only to find the reservation had been cancelled between them and my agent. We still do not know how this happened, but luckily they still had a room. Reception tried hard for us. Rooms and entrance are ready for an upgrade. It smelt musty. It is a comfortable enough place to stay and you get what you pay for. I would go back again. Best position for metro - it's next door, and so on to anywhere in DC. The old town trolley tour stops outside as well.

The restaurant service and lobby service was poor as post of the staff had poor english. Breakfast was hard to find outside the hotel in the immediate area, unless you just want coffe and a muffin. Restaurants were more easy, but don't forget this is Washington with Washington prices.

Great location; grand, classy lobby. On the weekend we stayed there, there were multiple events going on, so the lobby was always very crowded. The room was above average, but badly needs better sound insulation. We could hear people in the next room talking; and with all the windows closed, we could hear very clearly dogs barking outside. The service was not the best. Quite often the service staff seemed to have trouble understanding us or were not sure how to do their job (valet, bartender, cafe waiter, etc.). On one afternoon while we were napping in our room, a service staff barged into our room to check the minibar. We told him we didn't touch anything in the minibar, but he insisted on checking it. This was quite unusual and rude. At check out, we were double charged for parking. As a group we have three rooms and two cars. The hotel already added the valet parking charge to one of our rooms, but after we checked out and were ready to get the cars, we were charged again for parking, not just once, but twice, for both cars. The staff at the front desk was friendly and the issue was resolved smoothly, but this added unnecessary stress to our departure and left us wondering how many people left before realizing they were double charged.

This property had an okay location. It was within a manageable walking distance to the National Mall and it is right by a Metro station. It was an historic hotel, but it needs a little remolding to the rooms. I have stayed in other Renaissance hotels in the U.S., but the rooms at this location fall below the Renaissance standard. The beds were clean, but the chairs and vanity pillows were not. Also, the sofas by the elevators were dirty. Room service took our order, but did not deliver it. Also, beware of the mini bar. Make sure you inventory it when you check-in. At check-out, I found erroneous mini bar charges on my bill. The hotel staff was friendly. They corrected the mini bar charges and merely apologized for the room service error. This hotel could be so much better!!! I can’t say that I received the “true” Renaissance experience.

Room Tip: Inside rooms have awful views!

Very centrally located. We were upgraded to a suite and it was quite spacious and enjoyable. The workout facility is very good for a hotel and includes free weights up to 45lbs, ten treadmills, and a few machines.
The hotel is very centrally located for getting around DC and you can walk to the major attractions, easily get a taxi, or walk to the corner and jump on the metro.
For those that are Marriott gold members, the lounge is quite good for breakfast.

If you are going to DC over the weekend when hotel prices are very low, you must stay here. It is a great experience at a bargain price. The decor is gorgeous, the rooms are very spacious and the service is friendly and attentive. Central location so you can walk to all the museums and the metro.
