The Omni Shoreham is an institution in the Washington area and unfortunately like most Washington institutions it’s a little tarnished. First, it’s in a great area. Convenient to downtown and the zoo and very close to the Metrorail. It’s also near some great casual dining places and a stone’s throw to the Rock Creek Park with a great bike/jogging path. The interior of the hotel is splendid and the layout is grand. But I was very disappointed in the room conditions. The carpeting in my room looked terrible with spots, stains and bleach marks. The carpeting looked like it had never been cleaned. The bath also had mildew stains in the tub surround. Both of these maintenance items should be easily attended but the Omni may have spent big bucks on renovations but little on routine cleaning.
On the positive side, the room was spacious and they feature free wireless internet access. The restaurants are upscale for hotel dining but there is a coffee shop and you are close enough (walking distance) to a wide variety of restaurants, so you can easily skip the in-house establishments. If they replaced the room carpets and paid some closer attention to the routine room cleaning, the hotel could easily deserve a four-star rating.
