We visited Washington, D.C. for a short trip this past weekend. We stayed at the Omni because the rates were great, and it was a short walk to the zoo -- which was the main purpose of our trip. This hotel didn't disappoint. We traveled with our 7-year old son, so are always looking for certain "family friendly" features of the hotel and area, and the Omni Shoreham didn't disappoint.
First, when we checked in, our son received a backpack with some little toys and books, etc. which was great. It was especially helpful when we went to the pool -- he used the hackey sack in the pool for a game of catch. Also impressive was the cold milk and huge cookie waiting for us in the room. The cookie elves must have gotten to the room right when we checked in, since it was cold milk (hadn't been sitting there....) --- it was pretty impressive.
The hotel is clean, staff is friendly, and eager to be helpful. The location is right in the heart of a safe, busy urban area with a few streets filled with restaurants, pizza places, and a CVS (great for last minute items that you don't want to pay big bucks for at the hotel -- juice, snacks, etc...). Be warned -- the cost of food, etc. at the hotel is realllllyyyy high. We went to Open City diner across the street (see review) for breakfast (really good) and a pizza place for dinner. We did eat the buffet at Roberts for breakfast, which was about 55 bucks (with tip) for a fairly typical spread (omlet station, yogurt, breads, etc).
Pool area is great, and a little oasis tucked away from the city. Temperature of the pool is warm, and menu at the pool bar is pretty good. Again -- we paid 20 bucks for a glass of wine, bottle of milk, and a glass of gingerale. There is a sign asking you not to bring outside food/drink to the pool, so be prepared to spend some money if you want a snack or drink there.
Metro is several blocks away near the zoo, and the zoo was about a 15 minute walk through a nice, urban area with coffee shops and restaurants. There is a 7-11 somewhat near the zoo entrance as well if you want to save some money on drinks, etc.
We had a 2 bed Queen room (wanted a suite, but they were sold out). It was fairly good size for our little family. I imagine a larger family would have felt cramped. The bathroom was pretty tiny, but everything was beautiful decor, calming colors, etc. Plus, no mini-bar in the room which was a plus, since many hotels have them and charge for just lifting up the item (great when you have kids).
Don't miss the cool memorabilia in the lobby (a set-list written by John Lennon when the Beatles played there in the 60s was really cool) -- it is easy to pass by when running through. Take the time to stop and read the banners in the lobby that have interesting tidbits about the hotel's history in the past.
My only complaint (aside from the really highly priced incidentals) was that the housekeeping that cleaned our room after the first night didn't quite tidy the room to the level of an elegant hotel such as this one. Dirty plates were left in the room, no new towels were provided (if you leave dirty ones on the floor, they should be replaced), and no new glasses were provided. Also, when I went to get a Q-tip the second morning, there was an open packet of Q-tips in the bathroom container (that holds the cotton swabs, etc) even though none of us had used any. That was kinda gross. It did take 30 minutes for our car to pull around from the valet -- seemed much longer with an anxious 7-year old. So, be sure to call well ahead of time before you need your car so it is waiting when you need it.
Aside from those items, I really loved this hotel and would come back. I'd recommend it to anyone visiting the area who wanted a breath of fresh air outside the hustle bustle of downtown D.C.
