We choose this hotel for its location to downtown, its relatively low price compared to its competition, and it is on the national registry of historical places. This hotel is a historical building and contains a lot of character. It is in no way cookie cutter and because of that it has its quarks. The room layouts aren't always the greatest because they weren't designed for it's current use when it was built way back when, but that is a good thing. All the rooms have tray ceilings, old large trim and moldings, wood windows, the best hotel bed I have ever slept in, mini fridge with mini bar, nice desk, free wifi, high ceilings, actual keys instead of cards, individual room HVAC controls, and it felt clean for an old building. Plus it has a neat courtyard and large front porch. Our room even had unique double doors to the bathroom.
Their is a downside to all of this though. The wood windows do not provide much sound protection and being downtown there is a lot of traffic and sirens. Our room faced the street and was much louder than our friend's room that faced the courtyard. Also, the old doors do not provide much noise protection to the hallway, so this definitely isn't a quiet hotel. I live in old an home so these things do not bother me but may bother some. Also, there wasn't much light in the bathroom.
The staff was very friendly and accommodating. They even allowed a late check out of 2:00 PM which I thought was above and beyond my usual experiences. The rooms were very clean and even provided turn down service. We didn't find time to eat in the hotel but would have liked to try it because it looked very nice. There is no bar in the hotel though. They are always over willing to get you a cab and I believe provide valet.
Nearby is a corner store, a CVS, a breakfast shop, and it is located in between two rails so there is good access to anywhere. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel if you can look past the noise, but then again that could be a problem anywhere in a downtown setting.
