“Oldy but a Goodie”
Reviewed May 5, 2013

We stayed here, largely in part due to a colleague's recommendation. Whilst the hotel may not be the most modern, it's in a great location and very close to Foggy Bottom Metro. We managed quite well as a family of four with five cases to and from the airport using the metro and found that we could walk to the Smithsonian and White House from the hotel. As mentioned the hotel is not the newest but the rooms are very clean and the beds are comfy. The area is very safe and is predominantly occupied by uni students. We initially had a room on the first floor but found that we could smell cigarette smoke that was coming into the room as a result of the smoking area outside being close to the air conditioning inlet. After speaking with the front desk we were then moved to a room on level 5 the next day, which was fine.

There's a great Whole Foods store right around the corner (near the metro station) great for breakfast and you should try the great Gnocchi at the italian restaurant downstairs. Another great place to eat is Founding Farmers on Pennsylvania Ave, so good we ate there three nights in a row!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher level just in case cigarette smoke comes in through the air conditioning...

On a college trip my family stayed here and were very happy with the accomodation. After traveling on my daughter realized that she had left a small jewelery box in our hotel room. We called the hotel and they mailed the items back to our home address. We were delighted and surprised that they would go to this trouble and that attention to customer service sets them apart from other hotels.

It was a pleasure to find that we were able to exceed your expectations during your stay and even more pleased that we were able to locate and return the jewelery box back to your daughter that was left behind. We certainly pride ourselves on guest service and are glad that we were able to make your visit a memorable one.

Service and facilities were always a step behind. The hotel used to be very nice, and I booked the GWU Inn out of curiosity after not having stayed there for several years. The ground floor restaurant is quite good, a trendy Italian place, though pricey. The rest of the hotel is barely average. There is no detectable bell service, so guests have to schlep their own bags from curb to elevator. There are stairs to get to the elevator, so one can't really use a baggage cart. Couldn't find the valet, so we left the car keys with the front desk. The room, advertised as a "king suite" with a pullout sofa and kitchenette was chipped and dated and felt dirty. The king bed was quite comfortable, but the room was much smaller than we had hoped and not suitable for more than two persons. The pullout sofa turned out to be a twin size, so not useful for two kids, and when opened, it completely filled up the room's small seating area. There weren't any towels in the bathroom and we had to call the desk several times to get any delivered. We checked out early. I wouldn't recommend it and wouldn't go back.

Room Tip: The best rooms would be in a different hotel.

Stayed here for 4 nights for a busy convention so location was the primary selection driver. Small hotel in residential area adjacent to GWU. Great things: Easily walkable to Georgetown, M Street nightlife & dining and Kennedy Center where meeting was held. Every room has a fridge and a microwave plus coffee maker which is useful. Room was spacious with desk and wiFi included.

View of entry driveway/alley overlooking backyards was not very scenic but it was quiet. no noise issues at this hotel.

Not so hot: bathtub did not have a stopper so had to jam towels down drain to use the tub. After several days of this you would think the maids would get the hint, but no, no bathtub stopper ever arrived. Also the shampoo and conditioner are bolted to the wall in the shower but not great if you are not standing up to actually use the shower. used the plastic tray for the amenities to hold shampoo instead. Again, you would think these people would get the hint and bring plastic cups or something but never happened. Comment to hotel front desk about bathtub stopper was met with a shrug. Furnishings are scuffed, rugs have a few stains and pulled yarns, and the paint has been applied over past coats of paint.

No room service - if you want to eat a cold breakfast you need to get dressed and go downstairs. Better, get dressed and walk over to Watergage complex along New Hampshire Avneue to Cuppa Cuppa Cafe - excellent egg sandwich on an English Muffin and coffee for half the price of cold average continental breakfast.

Lots of short flights of stairs in and out which are not great for hauling luggage, and it is not recommended for those with mobility issues.

The final touch: at checkout the sleazy bellman who called his friend with a town car when I asked specifically for a taxi. Luckily a taxi arrived to drop off a guest right behind the town car so I sent the town car driver on his way. The bellmen get kickbacks from car services while taxi drivers do not pay kickbacks so if you want a taxi and the bellmen will not get one, claims they have to call one or it will take 15 minutes to find a taxi, just walk out to New Hampshire avenue on the curb - taxis go by frequently except late at night.

Late at night - the 7-11 up the street is about the only option after 10PM unless you go into Georgetown. There are no restaurants that deliver after 10pm that the hotel desk staff was aware of. Am sure this is not the case but requests for help to find a late dinner were met with a shrug.

Air conditioning is not great - it stopped cooling in middle of night so got hot and stuffy.

Tips: walk! take the Metro or most things you want to see and do are a short taxi ride away.

Loved: Boqueria Tapas bar at 19th & M Steet - went back for Tortialla Del Dia and the Gambas al Ajillo.

Cuppa Cuppa for tasty and inexpensive breakfast to go.

Funky but open late: Froggy Bottom Pub on Pennsylvania Avneue - basement college bar/pub, no frills but again, open late!

Room Tip: ask for a high floor.

This hotel is just two blocks from the Foggy Bottom Metro station and George Washington University. The Kennedy Center is a ten-minute walk, or there's a free shuttle from Foggy Bottom. Fifteen minutes of walking gets you into Georgetown and Washington Harbor, and of course with the Metro so close, the entire city is accessible.

The rooms are mostly spacious, with high ceilings, and many have mini-suite furnishings such as refrigerators and microwaves; some come with a full kitchen. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, and the hotel is a crossroads of artists, tourists, business people, and parents of university students.

Nearby there is a beautiful new Whole Foods, or if Trader Joe's is your preference, ten minutes of walking will get you there. The restaurants in the area are varied and delicious, in a wide range of prices and ethnicities. And delivery to the hotel is offered by numerous restaurants if you don't want to go out.

The room amenities are very nice, flat screen TVs in living and bedroom areas, coffee makers, and higher-end shampoos and lotions. The towels are thick and large, and the housekeeping staff keeps everything clean and tidy throughout. For the price, this is one of the best hotel bargains in DC.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floors have nice views of the Foggy Bottom and Georgetown areas, and the higher n...

We stayed at the GWU Inn while visiting colleges in the area. Its location just a couple blocks from the metro stop at the corner of GWU made getting to and from the airport an inexpensive breeze, as well as providing handy access to American U and sights like Arlington and the Mall (although one evening we walked back to the hotel after a self-guided walking tour of the monuments). The facilities are limited -- no pool or fancy lobby, but the attached restaurant Notti Bianche was a nice choice for our pre-concert dinner before walking just a few blocks to the Kennedy Center. The front desk clerk was helpful in arranging our dinner reservations when Open Table claimed to have no tables at our desired time, and we were always greeted by the bellmen and front desk clerks upon arriving and departing throughout our visit. Many other options for dining in the area, and we found healthy choices at the nearby Whole Foods to stock up for breakfast, and store in the handy fridge. The rates were very reasonable for the location, and I would recommend to anyone looking to stay in this part of D.C.

We are please that you found our location to be convenient for your traveling needs. You are correct we do not have a pool on our property but we do allow our guest to utilize the pool facilities at our sister property during pool season as it is an outdoor pool. We are begining the renovation of our lobby and fitness center later this month which will be a great addition to our property . We are glad that you were able to enjoy dining at Notti Bianche before attending your event at the Kennedy Center. It is always a pleasure to find that once again our team memebers met the expectation of our guests.

Thank you for sharing your comments and we look forward to your next visit.

If you're coming to DC for work and need somewhere close to Government offices and international organisations (IMF, World Bank etc) then this is good, as it's a ten minute walk but in a quiet neighbourhood area. Standard rooms are quite large and have a separate little area (between the bedroom and bathroom) that has a fridge, coffee maker, and microwave - great if you're staying for a week like I was. Staff has been helpful and attentive, although not sure I'd recommend the breakfast. All in all, I'd stay here again.
