We chose to stay at the Capitol Hill Hotel because we wanted an affordable stay within walking distance of the Mall. It ended up raining a lot during our stay, so walking didn't turn out to be a great idea. We would have been soaked by the time we would have reached the closest Smithsonian Museum (about a 15 minute walk). We ended up taking the train, located about 2 blocks west of the hotel. If you intend to use the Metro often during your stay, you should research fare options beforehand. We ended up using paper tickets and this cost us a considerable amount during our stay. Had we gotten a plastic farecard early in our stay, we could have saved a bunch of money.
Returning to the hotel, we were pleased with the cleanliness of the room and its amenities. We had a microwave, refrigerator, and tv. The tv didn't receive the greatest range of stations, but it did have some HD offerings. The bed was very comfortable and the room temperature controls were adequate.
The front desk staff was very polite and we did not have any trouble with checking in late (we didn't arrive until after midnight). We were offered free breakfast each morning in an adjacent building (we had to walk outside to reach the breakfast area). At breakfast, we could chose from a small selection that included cheese, olives, tomatoes, bananas, apples, bagels, scones, danishes, breads, and cereals. Our biggest complaint with breakfast was that it was very crowded and we were not able to get a table to ourselves. Luckily, we were invited to join the tables of other travelers, so we didn't have to stand. We also found that the selection of food diminished greatly as the morning progressed. I would advise that you arrive early for breakfast if you want a full selection of foods and a table to yourself.
Finally, if you are looking for food during your stay, the hotel offers a nice listing of restaurants in the area. The hotel is located in a residential neighborhood, but a short walk east will take you to Pennsylvania Avenue, where you can find some decent food options.
All in all we enjoyed our stay at this hotel. I would stay here again and I would recommend it for future travelers.
