“Good Location, Clean Room, Fair Price”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

We chose to stay at the Capitol Hill Hotel because we wanted an affordable stay within walking distance of the Mall. It ended up raining a lot during our stay, so walking didn't turn out to be a great idea. We would have been soaked by the time we would have reached the closest Smithsonian Museum (about a 15 minute walk). We ended up taking the train, located about 2 blocks west of the hotel. If you intend to use the Metro often during your stay, you should research fare options beforehand. We ended up using paper tickets and this cost us a considerable amount during our stay. Had we gotten a plastic farecard early in our stay, we could have saved a bunch of money.

Returning to the hotel, we were pleased with the cleanliness of the room and its amenities. We had a microwave, refrigerator, and tv. The tv didn't receive the greatest range of stations, but it did have some HD offerings. The bed was very comfortable and the room temperature controls were adequate.

The front desk staff was very polite and we did not have any trouble with checking in late (we didn't arrive until after midnight). We were offered free breakfast each morning in an adjacent building (we had to walk outside to reach the breakfast area). At breakfast, we could chose from a small selection that included cheese, olives, tomatoes, bananas, apples, bagels, scones, danishes, breads, and cereals. Our biggest complaint with breakfast was that it was very crowded and we were not able to get a table to ourselves. Luckily, we were invited to join the tables of other travelers, so we didn't have to stand. We also found that the selection of food diminished greatly as the morning progressed. I would advise that you arrive early for breakfast if you want a full selection of foods and a table to yourself.

Finally, if you are looking for food during your stay, the hotel offers a nice listing of restaurants in the area. The hotel is located in a residential neighborhood, but a short walk east will take you to Pennsylvania Avenue, where you can find some decent food options.

All in all we enjoyed our stay at this hotel. I would stay here again and I would recommend it for future travelers.

A nice hotel at reasonable price in such a convenient location in Washington? Some of my American friends didn't believe it could be done, but they were wrong. Capitol Hill Hotel is slightly quirky in layout and décor, but pleasantly so, the rooms are large and comfortable, the continental breakfast (included in price) has a decent if not huge variety of foods, and the staff were consistently pleasant and helpful. Yes, I recommend it.

TIP (1) For convenience stores and fairly basic eating opportunities you’re very close too lower Pennsylvania Avenue, easy walking. But id you’re staying in DC for a few days and have a seven-day Metro card (recommended) then you could use it to go one station further out from Capitol South (close to the hotel) to Eastern Market for a good range of restaurants of various ethnicities.

TIP (2) International travellers coming in to Dulles note that airport bus only takes you as far as the edge of the city and drops you at a Metro station. If you’re OK, there’s a station very close to the hotel, and on the same line so no changes, but if you’re hauling luggage… Cab fare to the hotel isn’t cheap. I found the best way to get in from, and later go back out to, the airport was the “shared van” (minibus) shuttle. If there’s more than one in your party it really does become a good deal because the price drops dramatically on second and subsequent persons. OK it goes round several hotels so you may be travelling a bit longer, but why not look on it as an extra tour? We did, and it helped us get our basic bearings on first arrival.

This hotel is conveniently located near the Capitol, Supreme Court, Union Station and a Metro stop. The room was large, clean, and comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. Only negative is that the included breakfast was served in an Annex building, which required a trip outside to a nearby building. It was not much of an inconvenience for us, but would have been very inconvenient in rain or cold weather.

Stayed 4 nights in early October. Great location for exploring D.C. Within walking distance of Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, Eastern Market, Union Station (Hey, I like to walk). Our room was quite spacious - king sized bed, large upholstered chair, mini kitchen, desk area, separate dressing area, smallish bath. I'm a light sleeper so quiet is important to me. I never heard other guests. There is a plentiful breakfast spread - fruit, yogurt, cheese, pastries, bagels, etc. We got a good rate through a travelzoo offer. I stayed here previously about 8 years ago and the remodeling that has been done since that time is great. Very close to Capitol South Metro station - another bonus!

We stayed at the hotel while on a roadtrip with friends to DC. They have mandatory valet parking for $38/night. We stayed 2 nights. We never took the car out of parking since everything was just a walk away, but somehow my car has scrapes all down the sides. We also stopped at a winery on the way to DC and picked up some wine. It was in my trunk when we turned the keys over to the valet. When we got home, it was no longer in my trunk. My phone charger and some Nintendo DS games were also missing. The hotel told me "oh well" when I could actually get someone on the phone. Usually they hung up on me or quickly shuffled me off to a voicemail box that was convieniently full.

The room was nice enough, we got a double queen suite with a kitchen, but whomever the cleaning staff was......they took our used cups and moved them from the "kitchen" sink to the dining table, still dirty. Now, I can wash my own dishes, but for what I paid per night, why would you put dirty dishes on the table if they were in the sink? They also took the trash out of the cans and piled it up in the dining area and left it.

When we called for a crib (travelling with a 2 month old) it took them 3 phone calls and over an hour to bring it up. We even asked if one of us could just come get it and we were told "no, someone will be right up". I believe we arrived at 1:30am (asked for a crib when we made reservations) and the crib showed up about 3am.

Horrible customer service. I will never stay at this hotel or ANY affiliated with Hersha Hospitality. I was promised a comp'd night from the manager and a month later, I still haven't received it.

I stayed here for 2 nights with my husband for a wedding. It is really a great location - diagonally across the street from St. Peter's which is where the ceremony was. Also 2 short blocks to the metro, which was very convenient.
Our room was spacious and decent size. The bathroom wasn't very large though, and in need of a bit of updating. The lobby is quite attractive and there are complimentary beverages through our the day (coffee, tea, ice water, etc.) There is a refrigerator and microwave in the room as well, which was a nice bonus.
Breakfast is included in the price and we found it to be more than adequate. There was fresh fruit, cereal, bagels, pastry, juices in plentiful amounts. The room was busy, but we always found a table.
My only fault with the hotel is that the rooms are not well insulated. You can hear hallway noise as if the people are in the room with you. We were also next to a staircase and every time the door was opened to the staircase, it sounded like our room door was being opened - which was disconcerting. We were also on the 2nd floor and could clearly hear conversations of people walking by on the sidewalk.
All in all I would stay here again, for the price and location, it would be hard to beat.

Room Tip: Perhaps try an upper floor - might be quieter.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review.

Although we seldomly receive complaints regarding noise, we appreciate and value your feedback as it helps us to serve you better. When making reservations in the future, please request a higher floor and this will help when assigning rooms.

Notwithstanding the above, we are pleased that you loved the great location and reasonable rate and look forward to your return in the future.
