“Nice Hotel, side street location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2014 via mobile

This hotel is a great place for a few nights in Washington. We found the location pretty quiet and fairly close to the main sites. The room was very nice, the staff were very polite. The air con in the room was very noisy though and their engineer couldn't fix it. If we were there for longer, we would have asked to move. Bar prices are pretty high, but what you would expect in a city hotel. Be aware of the tipping culture, it's expected.

There were a few decent bars in the area, and plenty of restaurants. DuPont Circle wasn't that great, there didn't seem to be a lot there.
Take a trip to Georgetown, great for shops and places to eat and it has a lot of character.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for the weekend of July 3-6. All in all, we really enjoyed the hotel and would definitely return. The location can't be beat. It's near Dupont Circle, near to the metro and a lot of great restaurants. This hotel is a small boutique hotel and everyone who works at this hotel is extremely friendly and helpful. Our room was huge, considering we were staying intown. The hotel is older, but it's still in great shape; they must have recently renovated the rooms though. The room was large with a king-sized bed, a sitting area, a desk area and even a dressing area with a vanity. The bathroom was fine, and I will add that the soaps & lotions they provide smell amazing! I'm going to have to find out where I can buy the sames one for home! Definitely join the Kimpton rewards program before arriving so that you get the free internet and we also were provided a credit to use for either the mini bar or bar downstairs. This hotel provides a lot of nice amenities that you normally don't receive with the larger hotels, such as yoga mats with a channel showing yoga videos all day, complimentary wine happy hour and complimentary bicycle rentals. This hotel was a great base for our weekend of exploring the city. I've read reviews of people complaining about street noise, but I don't think it was any louder than any other hotel in the city so if you are a light sleeper you may want to bring ear plugs, but we didn't have any issues.

Room Tip: ask for a room on a higher level if you are sensitive to street noise

Even though the room was very comfortable, we weren't fully satisfied with our experience at Topaz Hotel. Upon arrival, we were told that there was no more place available in their 42$/day parking lot and we were expeditiously redirected by the hotel staff to a public parking nearby. Little did we know that it happens to be closed during the most part of the weekend and that finding a permanent parking spot in Washington can be a nightmare, since weekdays + saturday street parking are time limited to 1 or 2 hours. As a plan B from our plan A, we wandered around D.C with our car for the afternoon and managed to find free street parking for the night when we came back. Upon spending more time at the hotel, we realized that the hotel was barely half full and that what they call a parking lot happens to be merely their small backyard, which can accommodate no more then 20 cars, plus what we were told some "others" unperceivable locations. To the standard of most people, it is far from what is suggested with the mention of "parking without reservation available" on their website.
This experience made us very unsatisfied since the hotel staff proved themselves to be unhelpful, unapologetic and, I must admit, rude toward our problem. We can understand that this problem can occurs with a overrated downtown located hotel near the amazing Dupont Circle, but the so so costumer service which with we were met changed our weekend from relaxing to an urban adventure.

Dear dismel,

Thank you for your review of your recent stay. I am really sorry to hear about the trouble you had with the parking and how that whole situation unfolded. I agree with you that this is less than acceptable and I totally understand why this would leave such a bad taste in your mouth about your experience. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I assure you that it will be addressed with our team.

Thank you again for taking the time to let us know. Enjoy the rest of your summer.

This is a unique hotel nestled in the brownstones of N Street. You would never know with the hustle and bustle of the city that this quaint home away from home existed :D Perfect place to lodge and visit the big city. Great staff, comfortable rooms and great atmosphere.

Room Tip: rooms away from the elevator eliminate noise level. Street lined rooms are quiet.

Had a nice stay at Topaz wich is conveniently located nor far from the National Mall. The hotel itself ia a little older in aa rather unattractive building (from the outside) amongst nice townhouses. The good thing is that you see the nice town houses when you look out of the window.
Rooms are very nice though and the greatest plus of this hotel are the very friendly staff and the free bikes the give you on request. Get one early in the morning and ride down to the monuments before breakfast. A perfect way to start the day.

For $217/night, this is an average hotel. Service was good. They staff tried. However, our room had bugs and the bathroom tub was falling apart. The renovation was second rate. Corners were not even finished. Also, design was really pretty awful in my opinion. I'm glad I only had to stay there one night. I hope this is helpful

Staff was very helpful as we were first time visitors to the nation's capital. Enjoyed the happy hour with complimentary wine when returning after a day of monuments and museums. Would highly recommend the Topaz for DC tourists.
