We travel to Washington DC fairly often and stayed at the Topaz on the recommendation of friends. It was extremely comfortable, and the staff was just amazing, extremely engaging and welcoming. They hold a lovely wine hour in the afternoon (free), and the rooms are huge, very clean and reasonably priced. The Topaz is centrally located--has very convenient valet parking and also has a small but delightful restaurant. It will certainly be our first choice of hotels from now on!

Room Tip: We chose a room on a higher floor; I'm sure all floors are fine.

Stayed at the Topaz over several nights and found it measured up with other Kimpton properties...comfortable bed, edgy decor, a hip bar, free wine tasting, etc.

The staff here really stands out for their courtesy and attentiveness. Anytime I saw a staff member in the lobby, the elevator or on my floor they were quick to greet meet and ask how my stay was.

I had to settle for a room with two queen beds because all the king rooms were booked. The size of the room was very large and L-shaped with a large work desk The bathroom wasn't anything more than average. One particular annoyance is that they don't provide typical bath amenities in small travel containers. Instead, the shampoo, conditioner and shower gel (I'm more of a soap guy) are in hand pumps that are mounted on the wall of the tub enclosure. The gel dispenser, in particular, proved problematic with the top of the pump repeatedly coming off.

The bed was comfortable, although I was awakened a few times by the constant hum of the elevators, even though my room wasn't directly adjacent to it. The hotel itself doesn't even look like a hotel from the outside...more like a 60's era apartment building, which is what it was in its previous life. Forget about any sort of views...this is DC, so there are no high rises. The stretch of N street is very quiet, although it's only a half-block away from the hustle and bustle of Connecticut Avenue and Dupont Circle. The nearest Metro stop at Dupont Circle is about a five minute walk.

There is a free continental breakfast which I was unable to take advantage of because it doesn't start until 7:00, which is too late for me. The hotel's restaurant and room service skews Middle Eastern...a type of cuisine that holds little appeal to me. There is no on site fitness center but they do offer passes to the YMCA around the corner.

Overall I am happy with the property, although I do think that it is overpriced. The rates may be higher here because of the limited number of rooms at this property. However, I do know that those rates can fluctuate 30-40%, based on the prices that some of my colleagues have paid here.

Room Tip: Make sure to request a room as far away from the elevators as possible

This is a wonderful hotel, with friendly, helpful staff across the board; every staff person we encountered called us by name. The atmosphere is fun, and the hotel is very nice. The bar area is hopping in the evening. Our room was large, and although we booked a regular room, was actually a suite as a result of an upgrade.

Spent presidents day weekend. Nice hotel and good location. Did have a street room which I liked. My wife is a light sleeper and did not like the roudy people on the street at night, so if you are a light sleeper you may want an inside room. Wine/beer reception is on point.

The modern furnishings and decor make this one of our favorite boutique hotels in the city. Located just a few blocks from many restaurants/bars/clubs in Dupont, too.
