I had heard of Bed and Breakfasts for several years. I even spent my honeymoon at one in Williamsburg, Virginia. They have rules and customs, and depending upon how demanding your host is, there may be many. One of the common traits of a Bed and Breakfast is that you, of course, get a free breakfast if you so choose. Now, if there are other guests staying at the same house you are, you may have a community breakfast, with people you don’t know. As long as you are willing to meet and learn about new people, this will prove enjoyable for you. Of course, there are the characters that will either make you laugh, or get on your nerves. However, B&B’s are in a house, usually in a quiet neighborhood. The owners are very friendly and helpful, and if there is someplace you would like to go, they recommend sites to visit, and know how to get there. They are much like the concierges in hotels.
Now about four hears ago, my wife — who is an avid researcher — found out about the company called AirBnB. It was started in 2008, with its headquarters in San Francisco. It has over 4 million lodging listings in 65,000 cities and 191 countries and has facilitated over 260 million check-ins. This company operates on a more upscale version of a B&B: you not only can choose your location, but you can choose the type of domicile you would like to stay in. even houseboats! This has its advantages, especially over hotels. You won’t have room service, or a concierge, but the owner of the property usually assists you with these kinds of requests, and is very friendly about it, too. Since you are staying in a property that is owned by the owner, they can give you helpful tips about the neighborhood you are in, and what amenities are nearby. They also function much like a concierge. There was a little coffee house down the street, which was very convenient, and full of tasty items similar to what you’d find in a Starbucks or Panera Bread.
We stayed at a townhouse in Northeast D.C. near Capitol Hill. It was a quiet, older neighborhood, and our townhouse had obviously been renovated. It had all the items you would normally find in a home: a living room/dining room combination, a fully loaded kitchen and three bedrooms upstairs. The kitchen had a dishwasher, stove, cabinets for storing, refrigerator/freezer and even its own bathroom. The upstairs rooms were spacious and the beds were comfortable. There was even a clothes washing machine with the companion clothes dryer upstairs. If you wanted to air-dry your clothes, a small clothes line was available on the back patio. It was close to the Stadium Armory Metro station, about a half-mile away. On a cooler day, it is a nice walk. Since we were in D.C. in July, and it was typical hot and muggy D.C. weather, we took Uber just about everywhere we went.
Dealing with our agent was a very pleasant experience. He advised us about any questions we had, and even helped me when I lost the keys to the house. (I later found them, and all were relieved). I would recommend using AirBnB to anyone who is travelling and wants to stay where they can enjoy the comforts of home.
The house was fantastic and in the best location!! Rosalyn was very nice and accomodating!!! Recommend highly!
The house was lovely and the location was perfect. The owner was very responsive and helpful. She gave us some great suggestions of things to do during our stay. It was very clean and comfortable.
The house was very cozy. The beds were comfortable. The air conditioning was a relief after a day of walking in DC. Everything we needed was right there. There was plenty of information to help us discover where we wanted to go. Parking was easy and we were close enough to walk to restaurants or the transit. I would recommend this house to others.
The stat was great. We couldn't ask for anything better. The house was very clean and maintained and every was just as described
We were very pleased with our rental and enjoyed the idea of having our family all together of an evening and morning. It was so close to so many of the attractions that we could walk. Loved seeing the sights and the people were so friendly and helpful. Would do the same trip again.
First off, this was not our first choice- Rose kindly bailed us out of an emergency situation because the original property we booked was flooded. TripAdvisor staff handled situation very poorly- but that's on another review.
We were supposed to check in at 4, but she allowed us to drop off our luggage at 3, but renters before us were JUST leaving. Maids took until almost 5 to finish cleaning.
Cean house, but stairs are steep & treacherous. Huge challenge getting luggage up. Second step slopes downward & should be corrected. Upstairs bedrooms were warm, if downstairs is comfortably cool. Opened the window in middle BR helped, but very NOISEY- people yelling outside after midnight.
Shower stalls were tiny- hard to maneuver in -and none of us weighs more than 140 lbs- can't imagine if there were larger people in there. Also heavier people will cause floors and stairs to creak a lot!
Location was maybe about 15-20 minutes from most attractions. Traffic going into center was really bad.
You can walk a few blocks to grocery stores and restaurants, but I wouldn't do it too late.
Only one TV in living room.
Street parking is by permit, which Rose provided, and we were usually lucky finding something on this street.
Bottom line, I would not stay here again.
