“The rooftop can be very hot in the summer.. Make sure you sit by the air conditioner”

The hummus, scallops, and shrimp are AMAZING!! If you choose to eat on the rooftop when it's warm outside, make sure you sit in the very back by the air conditioners!!

“Go for the food, don't stay for the atmosphere (especially in summer)”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2013

So I decided on this place for the 4th of July because I had family in town and it had a great view of the washington monument and captial building (ala fireworks).

1. Summer is hot, their glass room has airconditioners but the ceiling is open so, it's still warm and sticky in the summer unless you get a table in the direction of the airconditioners, keep this in mind when asking to reserve a table.

2. If you are there for the 4th...get a table at the BACK of the restaurant, against the back window on the LEFT side of the room, this will afford the best view. We were on the right side against the back window and our view of the fireworks was cut off.

3. The bathrooms are tiny (women's bathrooms) so if you are a bigger individual be prepared to fold a little more than you are comfortable with in the stall.

4. The food is everything ZAGAT said it would be, excellent, yummy. The 4th is a set menu. The lambchops and vegis are great. Desserts (poached pear) quite good. Wine selection by the glass is so-so, bottle selection is better. They have a decent list of draft beer. Set menu on the 4th is $75/head BUT don't forget the mandatory 10% tax AND ~20% mandatory gratuity given the special occasion, it doesn't include drinks either which run $7 for beer on up to $13 cocktails. The cocktails sound delicious although I didn't try any.

5. Many of the tables have chairs directly in the way of their wall lights. Consequence of attempting to fit as many tables as possible in a small space. Request a table where the chair is NOT up against a light, at night when they turn the lights on, your chair = lava. My husbands shirt was close to catching on fire. Also, with so many people in that room many blocking the side lights as they sit in their chairs, it makes for very 'dark' dining. You can request a candle for your table and I recommend it.

6. The restaurant is up 3 flights of stairs, no elevator, bear that in mind.

On a cooler day this restaurant would be a great for after work cocktails/tapas. It's not great for families, it's more of a 'dark bar' albeit high class experience. The food is pretty delicious though I don't know I would go back this summer just for the food. If I do go back, I know what to ask for now:

--No table near a light
--Table in path of aircon in summer
--Candle for table if dining at night
--Do tapas, don't go for the set menu it's very pricey
--If going in summer dress casual smart lighter clothing be prepared to be a bit sticky
--Not 'family' oriented, think couples or after work crowd
--IF going for 4th of July, table back of room against window on LEFT side in path of aircon.

Great view, great food, service so-so (they forgot about us for awhile after giving us the dinner) but it was a full restaurant, though sitting next to the lava lamp I could've used a few more water refills.

“Twice is more than enough”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2013

First visit was only for drinks. We ordered sangrias, and they literally have the fruit and the sangria separate (they add when ordered).

Second tiime we went for brunch. I ordered the Eggs Casserole. The casserole had not been baked, and the plate was packed with room temperature cream. Instead of baking it, they used a blow torch to slightly brown the top. I barely touched the dish. No one in the restaurant seemed to care that a customer had left the entire dish.

“A few tips”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2013 via mobile

The food is good and the space is unique.

Here are my suggestions:

1. A 9PM reservation should mean that the patron is seated at or very shortly after 9PM
2. Brighten the lighting a touch
3. Turn down the volume of music
4. Don't just hook up someone's iPod to the speaker system: write a cohesive playlist that jives with the culture of the place. Bajofondo is great, for example. Create a pandora station and go with it.

Good, definitely not great experience

“Beautiful Enclosed Rooftop”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 14, 2013

There are a lot of restaurant options in the U Street neighborhood, and living there, I've tried them all. Tabaq is the spot I return to most frequently for brunch. Although the rooftop "green house" room could use a touch-up, the view is unbeatable, and the food is reliably good!
