Yes, I do mean 5 stars. Prices close to ridiculous, tiny portions in the restaurant. Service mediocre.

But then again, wonderful (wildly expensive) fish at the front to buy and cook yourself.

Restaurant at the back. Shiny and to me cold decor. Service mediocre. They have something better to do, like a long chat with a colleague. Also excellent fish very well cooked and they will serve you way beyond normal DC lunch times.

Obviously, based on the title I have mixed feelings about Blacksalt. There is no question that Blacksalt prepares amazing food with the best ingredients. What I can't understand is why they have to be so stingy with their portions sometimes. Some dishes are reasonable in size and then others are laughably small. On one visit I made a meal sharing the Cesar salad and ordering an appetizer from the "hot" list. On another, the same salad was half the size and the $16 scallop appetizer was comprised of two quarter size scallops--disgraceful. The $11 hot apple cider and cookie desert is a generous cup of cider with two minuscule cookie quarters (you can buy a whole cookie at the market for a buck). The octopus hot appetizer also varied in portion size from visit to visit. And no, we had not doubled the size of appetizer to entree size which you are able to do. So, bottom line, quality is consistently excellent but you end up feeling ripped off half the time. Don't think bill be back.

We followed online recommendations and booked BlackSalt for dinner on a recent trip to DC. What a great choice it turned out to be! Fantastic menu--we could hardly choose, because everything looked interesting and delicious. We had to share an extra first course, oysters rockefeller, and loved their version of this classic. Then husband had caesar salad with house cured anchovies; he reported their anchovies were distinctive and great. I had fried clams and felt the same about my choice--they were very plump, the breading was at the perfect point between crisp and crunchy, and the curry aioli was wonderful with them. Main courses: His tuna was amazing, but so was my halibut. The steward's wine recommendation was excellent and reasonably priced. Overall, the food is very very good--five star quality, mostly classics with a twist. Even though the place was busy, the service was paced exactly as we like it.
Other reviewers have commented on how casual the restaurant is--some like it, some don't. We loved it--a little road-housey, like places you find in Napa. The crowd is a great mix--to one side of us, two young married couples, one gay and one straight, had a great time talking about babies and real estate. On the other, a young dating couple (grad students maybe?) was having a romantic evening. Down the row of tables, an older faculty couple was eating and talking intently; and throughout the room, there were a lot of people who looked more like DC insiders. Everyone struck us as interesting, happy, and totally Georgetown. We had a great time reveling in the food, drifting through our own conversation, and people watching.

We went to BlackSalt based on TripAdvisor reviews and were not disappointed. We traveled from VA and the restaurant was in a neighborhood location outside the city proper. We were seated in the back room and it was quiet and comfortable. We ordered the Caesar Salad and asked the chef to cut some tuna sashimi for us - both were very good. My husband had the snapper and I had the the Tuna and it was delicious. We topped it off with the peanut butter crunch cake, which was worth saving room for. Our only disappointment, and it was a small one, was that their wine list didn't have a lot of full-bodied selections. One was chosen for us and it was good. I would recommend others, especially fish lovers, to visit BlackSalt.

Took my husband for his birthday dinner. We love a fine food experience, so opted for the chef tasting menu with wine pairings. Not cheap, but it was a special night. We ate in the far back room - it was serene. Service was very good - only negative was our main server didn't have the clearest English, so hearing the details of each dish was hard to get. We also didn't get one wine on time. It was a bit disjointed having multiple staff doing the wine and dish presentation. We enjoyed each spectacular dish. The amuse bouche was a tiny oyster with caviar and brine - it amused. The Japanese yellowfin sashimi was perfect with a play of soya, jalapeño, radish and grapefruit. John Dorrey with shrimp in a bacon broth was heaven. Tasted tile fish with a delightful scallop in a maple and pecan reduction - a lovely tribute to the season. The Arctic char with lobster was tasty - I personally don't enjoy the rare preparation of such a fatty fish. Desert was way to much after such a feast - but it was well plated and the little tastes we had of each of the three samples were good. We loved all the wines - very nice selection. Great dinner and a happy birthday!
