Description: Oyamel combines Mexico's rich regional diversity with the modern urban atmosphere of Mexico City. The liveliness of the dining room is matched by the creativity of the menu and cocktail list, featuring antojitos-Mexican small plates-ceviches and tacos, plus unique margaritas, and an impressive array of wines and tequilas. Originally opened in 2004 in the Crystal City neighborhood of Arlington, Oyamel moved to its current home in the Penn Quarter in March of 2007.

We loved Oyamel! The table-side guacamole was excellent and the chips are addictive. The ceviche was excellent, but our favorite thing was the Brussels sprouts (I know - Brussels sprouts!). Strangely, the tacos were actually the weak spot on the menu.
Our server was very cheerful and helpful. The food came out quickly and dirty dishes were cleared promptly. Fun atmosphere, but a little noisy. Would definitely return.

My husband and I were on a family vacation in DC with our 2 kids, 11 and 8. This is not what many folks and especially American kids consider "mexican." So please, if you're looking for chimichangas and burritos, this is NOT the place. The style is more of a "tapas" Mexican, small plates with interesting dishes. We even saw grasshopper on the menu! Hubby would have tried it, but our daughter overruled him! The ceviche was first rate, as was the delightfully prepared table-side guac. The waitress and overall service was excellent , but, this place does not cater to kids, so take that into consideration if you're going with little ones. No kids menu, and was a bit of a struggle to figure out a few selections for the 8 year old picky eater. The rest of us were blown away by the food! Mescal flights and an amazing salt foam atop the margarita were icing on the cake. If at all possible, try if you're in DC.

My husband and I stopped here for lunch on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Sat at the bar and had a Bloody Mary and ate there..the Bloody Mary was made from fresh squeezed tomatoes..which honestly I didn't like as much as other Bloody Mary mixes..probably because it didn't have all kinds of junk that I'm used to in the mix. It was busy, fun and the food is very good..I had some trouble since I don't eat meat, and there was a lot of meat on the menu..but had an excellent hearts of palm salad with grapefruit, orange and radish. And a white meat chicken enchilada with verde sauce that was fabulous. My husband had had the special soup,,a hearty soup with pork, beans, radish, lime, avocado and lettuce..then he had huevos rancheros which he thought was very good.
There was construction going on..the bar is expanding into the storefront next door, doubling the bar/lounge area and allowing about 6 more tables, the bartender told us. I would recommend it..it was clean, good and not outrageously expensive

Great place we discovered in the rain. Had excellent guac prepared table side. Many wonderful tapas-cactus salad, tacos and ceviche- yum! Wonderful margarita with frothy 'salt air' on top. House made carmel ice cream is delicious! We left at 10:30 on a Friday night and the place was still super busy!

Found this place after visiting the National Archives, and enjoyed a very pleasant meal. The decor is quite lovely and the service prompt and professional. Some of the dishes (hangar steak, traditional ceviche, brussel sprouts) hit the mark better than others, but there are enough choices, reasonably priced, that you will be able to make a tasty meal.
