Good for: Business meetings
Dining options: Lunch, Breakfast, Dinner, Reservations
Description: Forget all the cliches about heavy Austrian fare served by waiters in lederhosen. Leopold is about as Euro trendy as it gets, with an all-day coffee and drinks bar, an architecturally hip dining space, and a chic little patio complete with a minifountain. Food is pared-down Mitteleuropean: mushroom tart, crisp schnitzel paired with peppery greens, an endive salad with mustard dressing. In the middle of a design-obsessed alley just off of M Street, the cafe draws an artsy city crowd that's content to sit and watch the scene evolve, just as it's done in Europe. Brunch is a particularly popular setting for such people-watching manna, and the neat-as-a-pin breakfast is available daily until 4 pm. The perfect oasis for breakfast, lunch, dinner or anything in between. They have a very respectable wine list that compliment all the dinner specials. Reservations are taken for dinner only, starting at 5pm.

Great spot for a quick bite. Good variety of food, great salmon and cucumber salad tea sandwich! Great strawberry mojito too!

One year ago we had a really good brunch experience so we decided to come again. The food is very good. We had grits with prosciutto and eggs with shrimp and salad, both were delicious. This time we also tried some desert and pastries. The sacher was outstanding and the baked chocolate mousse with ice cream was very yummy (good for share).
The only issue is the service. Our server was not attentive and he was very pushy.

The amount charged to my credit card was altered after the fact - adding 14% to the bill. I guess they figure most people don't check their statement. Average food, really poor service and thieves.

We came here after dinner and a walk our first night in Washington, D.C. It is hidden fron view but my husband persisted in looking down the hallway where Illuminations Inc. was and there it was, the best in desserts and coffees. Stop in and you won't be disappointed.

Dined here twice. We had an outstanding meal when visiting in the morning - egg dishes were perfectly cooked to order and the Belgian waffle was delicate, crispy and tender. Waitstaff were attentive and skilled.

Unfortunately, my lunch experience was nowhere near the same level. Told it was about a 15 minute wait for a cafe table (outside). Of course, you can't hurry people along but the 15 minutes actually dragged into 35. Kafe L is a place where people do like to linger - so be forewarned. Expect to double any wait time they give you.

I ordered the "French" croque monsieur, expecting it would be of high-quality ingredients based on the pricepoint. Very disappointing - it was essentially a mediocre ham and cheese on white sandwich-type bread that had been pressed on a panini grill, accompanied by about a 1/4 cup of plain greens as garnish (NOT a salad) This set me back TWELVE dollars!

The server was sweet but clearly inexperienced, she was not attentive and took forever to just take a drink order. She also did not advise what the specials of the day were, but did for other tables.

All in all, I would go back for breakfast or a dessert. But I will definitely not recommend it for any other meal based on my experience.
