First time there since they closed for renovations. We saw a great act featuring Janis Joplin, her music and the music that influenced her. Arena Stage is a block and a half from the Waterfront Metro stop. They now have a cafe for your pre-show dinning.

This theater is worth a visit just to see the wonderful job that was done in their rennovation. They kept the old theater-in-the-round and wrapped it in glass and reception/dining space. I recommend that visitors to DC who like theater to ombine a visit here with one to the DC waterfront.

Saw a lovely production of Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses. Beautifully staged in a lovely theater. A charming cafe to get a simple meal before the show.

The "new" Arena Stage is an excellent venue. Well organized, modern facility. The talent has always been great but the new building makes the whole experience so much the better. The theater in the round/square is a wonderful venue.

Came for the Architecture, as this extensive makeover a few years ago is one of the most daring new designs in WA DC. Was not disappointed. The setting sun poured into all the public spaces. We arrived early to explore the building and have dinner. Found parking easily on the street. Dined upstairs next to vast windows looking out to the waterfront. Food had high aspirations, and was plentiful for the $19 pre-order 3 course cafeteria option, however the main course suffered from steam table overcooking. My small serving of generic white wine in a plastic cup was not worth the $10. But we did enjoy the setting.
As for the play, ---the main reason this venue exists, we saw The Mountaintop, portraying MLK’s last night on earth. It was excellent. We were center balcony. A minor complaint: the seats were uncomfortable, as there is minimal leg room. With all the $ spent to remodel, I wish they had been able to reconfigure the old theater to gain some additional leg room. I would advise you scout out any seating which might offer more, as there may be some available on the main floor.
Staging was inventive and sophisticated. While there were only two actors, they did a stellar job. I would certainly return if I could 1) get more comfortable seating, and 2) not depend 100% on their food and wine for a complete evening. The Architecture is worth seeing, and was designed by Bing Thom from Vancouver BC. It’s his masterwork, over a long career. I’ve uploaded a few pictures. Inspiring evening!
