Owner description: Known as the "Cradle of the Emancipation Proclamation". The Cottage is where Lincoln lived with his family at the height of the Civil War. The Cottage is located on a picturesque hilltop in Northwest Washington, DC. Opened to the public for the first time in 2008 after being restored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Cottage is the only designated National Monument in DC and the only National Monument in the country that is operated by a non-profit. Guided tours of the Cottage focus on Lincoln's ideas and offer visitors an intimate view of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency and private life. Visitors are also invited to browse exhibits in the adjacent Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center. Tickets are required for entry to the Cottage, and advanced ticket purchase is strongly recommended. Weekend tours often sell out completely.

A fascinating location that tells about a side of Lincoln I have not heard about before. It was an interesting mix of technology, restoration, and narration at a unique location. I would not recommend the regular tour for children. This is about the history of Lincoln's Presidency not about the architecture of the cottage.

This was recommended, but I don't know why. The tour was extremely minimal with a few audio snippets once inside, the tour guide added nothing worthwhile, and the cottage itself was just a shell. They should have at least restored it to look like it looked during Lincoln's stay. A tour of the grounds and the Old Soldiers Home would have added significantly (but was not included). Stay away, this is just a waste of time and effort to get there (it is relatively far from any DC attraction).

The Lincoln Cottage is an excellent site that really utilizes modern technology. Rather than just fill the place with reproduction or antique furniture like many historic sites, they utilized ipads and flat screens to present a picture of Abraham Lincoln as president. I learned a lot of new things about him that made him seem like a real person, not simply the heroic statesman he is usually portrayed as. Definately a site to visit - but if you are not local (we weren't) give yourself plenty of time to get lost finding it. Its not easy to find!

My family & I stopped here on our way home from South Carolina & it was more then I expected. As we took the tour of the cottage, the tour guide played diary entries of actually people that stayed or worked at the cottage. I also learned more about Lincoln.

I've lived in DC for many years and frequently visit museums and historical sites, but had never been to President Lincoln's Cottage -- to be honest, wasn't even aware until recently of its significance and location. The site is lovely. It's located on the campus of the "Soldiers Home" about three miles north of the White House on one of the DC "crests", and at one time would have had excellent views of the Potomac and downtown Washington (now blocked somewhat by trees). The one-hour tour was very informative. Lincoln apparently spent half of the time during his presidency working and living here, and it's referred to as the Camp David of its time. If you're interested in American history, the "Cottage" really gives you a different and interesting perspective.
