Owner description: Known as the "Cradle of the Emancipation Proclamation". The Cottage is where Lincoln lived with his family at the height of the Civil War. The Cottage is located on a picturesque hilltop in Northwest Washington, DC. Opened to the public for the first time in 2008 after being restored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Cottage is the only designated National Monument in DC and the only National Monument in the country that is operated by a non-profit. Guided tours of the Cottage focus on Lincoln's ideas and offer visitors an intimate view of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency and private life. Visitors are also invited to browse exhibits in the adjacent Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center. Tickets are required for entry to the Cottage, and advanced ticket purchase is strongly recommended. Weekend tours often sell out completely.

This was my one of my favorite places in DC area. The cottage tour was not the usual tour. What a great contribution to Lincoln

Not a lot of people even know about this hidden gem. It's definitely off the beaten tourist path of DC. It is really interesting to see how Lincoln lived during his time in the White House. A great place and a great find for us.

I loved seeing this house, grounds, and hearing about the family living here, but was very disappointed there was no furnishings of Lincoln's in the cottage. The tour guide did a wonderful job of verbally recreating life at the cottage. The view from the hill was impressive.

A half price Groupon recently became available for President Lincoln's Cottage in D.C. We took my mother-in-law who was in town for a visit and she loved it. Well worth the trip downtown and the guide was super knowledgeable. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. We got hung up in traffic, (not surprising in this area) and were late for our 1PM reservation. No worries they said, just hang out and then join the 2PM group instead. Customer service at its finest. If you enjoy history, this place is really interesting.

The cottage is 3miles from the National Mall, it is worth the trip. Do not expect to see furnitures of Lincoln but expect to get insights on Lincoln's thinking during the Civil War and emancipation . Scott the guide, narrator was very good. He was very knowledgeable and engaging . The exhibits in the Administrative building was excellent, the short videos were educational.
Tip: buy souvenirs after the tour, if you donate a minimum of $50 ( a well worth donation to help preserve history) you get 15% from the gift shop.
We went during a rainy cold day so unable to go around the grounds of the Soldier's Home.
