We popped into Liebermans office about 1PM for passes to Senate and House. Received both and had a nice chat with a young senate office intern.
Headed to Senate first, had to pass through no less than six body scans. Seriously?! Senate floor was slow, Reid at one point had his head on his desk...not kidding. McCain did speak briefly after an hour of waiting for something to happen. These elected officials are given a painstaking job, we need to respect them more.
House was empty, not an elected official there.
But the experience was memorable for many reasons, we were in the very halls were US decisions are made, we met a wonderful Senate page who moonlights as a comedian (congressionalcomedian.com ) and we sat next to Dustin Hoffman in the Senate Gallery :)

We had a private tour arranged by the office of our state congresswomen and it was great. One of the office aids took our group of 3 privately through the capital explaining the history of the building as well as our State's contribution. Set up the tour about 3 months in advance. It will allow you to avoid the large public tours and skip the lines.

The Congress and Senate buildings were interesting to visit once inside but be warned that they confiscate water, sun cream etc at the door. It was 40*C when we visited so very inconvenient.

Dirksen Senate Office Building has a cafeteria in the basement that has great prices, no tax and options from grill items, pizza, sushi and an AWESOME salad bar.

Here is the recommended game plan:
Make arrangements with your senator before your trip to do a capitol tour in the AM, then go to any senators office to get passes to see the senate and house floor, go back to the capitol and then head back to the Dirksen building for lunch and a coffee to go.

We also recommend the Library of Congress afterwards.

The Capitol Hill is magnificient, but the buiding for the senators and officers are just common office buiding on the flank, very massive though.
