Owner description: The monastery in DC is the closest that some will get to visiting the Holy Land. The Monastery of Mount St. Sepulchre, designated a National Historic Site in 1991, has been a place of worship and pilgrimage for thousands of visitors since the church's dedication in 1899. Free tours are given daily of the catacombs, church, and gardens.

“Beautiful & very peaceful”

A must see while in Washington. We went during Christmas week and were lucky enough to see the nativity and other Christmas decorations. Such a beautiful & peaceful place. The tour was very informative. I would like to go back when the weather is nicer and you could see the outdoor gardens.

What an interesting place. A recreation of Bethlehem? Wow were we impressed. Beautiful grounds. Very contemplative and serene.

“Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 7, 2012

We have lived in the DC Area for 30 years and just recently visited the Monastary. It was a special visit attempting to give those of us that may not be able to travel to the Holy Land an idea of what one would see there. It was interesting and the grounds were beautiful on a fall afternoon in October, 2012. We are fortunate to have visited Rome. This visit before our trip could have been useful.

“Beautiful artwork, Humbling tour - what a treasure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2012

The gardens are nice - show a journey of Christ's life. The tour is the thing to see - I had a tour guide that was a knight in the chirch (like an elder, not a monk) - he was passionate and did an excellent job explaining the history. The artwork through out will blow you away. You will experience what it was like to live in bible times - going thru catacombs, caves ....

“A quiet spot...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

Walking around the grounds of the Monastery, and sitting for a few moments on one of its benches offers a few minutes of quiet contemplation in Northeast DC. A tour of the monastery and a look through its bookstore is quite interesting as well.
