Not only the food here is fresh and yummy you can have a glass of wine or beer if you choose to. Great prices... No need to leave this place and go out to eat....here you can recharge and continue with your museum tour after your lunch:)

I was visiting the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, and the Atrium Cafe is the only choice for lunch in the building. It's easy to spend multiple hours visiting the museum, so this cafeteria has a captive audience upon which to prey. The security guards do not allow you to bring a bag lunch or a beverage into the building.

My girlfriend and I arrived at this cafeteria at about 1pm on a very busy Saturday, so this is probably about as busy as it ever gets. There are multiple serving stations and each one had long lines of people jutting out, to the point where it was hard to tell which line to join to get a certain type of food. If one in your party wants pizza and another wants a grill item, you may have to wait in two long lines.

To avoid waiting in multiple lines, we selected sandwiches and fries. Her hamburger was a bit overcooked and dry. My brisket sandwich was pretty good. We each had fries which were terrible. Those items plus a single bottle of water cost $29.

Yes, entry into the museum is free, like the other Smithsonian museums. Some may argue they have to make money on food and trinkets to offset the cost. However, I pay a huge amount of taxes to the federal government every year, so squeezing more money out of me for mediocre food seems insulting.

I love going to lunch here. It is close to my office and they offer sandwiches, soup, and salads. Sandwiches - one word AWESOME!!! Choose from ham, turkey, or roast beef. They carve the meat once you've made your selection. Large variety of breads to choose from and top off with your favorite fixins.
Salads- are prepared daily and always fresh. Several to choose from, but chicken cranberry is my favorite!
Soups- always 2-3 choices and I have yet to have one I didn't like. On a rainy day get 1/2 a sandwich and a cup or bowl of soup...yes they will make you a half sandwich!
This is a must stop lunch spot. Always clean, good food, fast service, friendly people!

Avoid. Expensive with poor service. Only dressing is Ranch. Hard to find a straw. Food is just ok and very pricey. Spent 30 on what would only be 15 anywhere else in dc. Museum is great but find another place to eat.
