They have an extensive vodka selection of course, but the service was helpful in deciding (the Hammer & Sickle was great!). Save the money on caviar and get the caviar blinis instead for a sample!

The venue is a split affair. Located in a corner townhouse, the top floor, which is the one through which you enter, is a bar that gets very popular and loud, very loud, over the weekend. For those to whom this means something, it has the feel of a sports bar, albeit a swanky one and one that boasts a huge number of vodkas (it is a Russian place, after all!). The crowd is quite eclectic, with both locals, expats and a sprinkling of tourists. On this occasion, I went to the restaurant, which is at street level but due to the layout of the place it feels like the basement. There are two dining rooms, both of which are quite dark, which should it give it a kind of romantic dinner type of feel but for some reason doesn't. And whilst the bar upstairs had a nice buzz on the night I went, the restaurant was decidedly lacking in atmosphere. The food was quite nice, with good-sized portions and the service was very friendly and informative -- sometimes a trifle too much as our waiter kept on popping up most unexpectedly like a Jack-in-the-box to offer a running commentary on this or that dish. They specialize in Russian food (doh!) with a twist to satisfy the Western palate. All the classics are there (e.g. blinis, borsht, Stroganoff), as well as less Slavic dishes, which can be washed down with any of the cornucopia of vodkas of the upstairs bar that are also on offer in the restaurant. If you crave Russian food, this is probably the best in DC, but I didn't think it warrants the high prices that are charged.

I was in D.C. on business. Four women decided to try the Russian House for a cocktail. It was definitely different from anywhere I had been before. The service was good. The drinks were very strong for me.

Not so heavy as some Russian food. Very pretty setting. Upscale with interesting cocktails. Not too expensive.

Try the Vodka sampler. A taste of Russia? Friendly atmosphere and a feeling like you are in Moscow.
