“Great service, pleasant setting, but no so great food :-(”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

Sadly CityZen didn't live up to our expectations when we visited this time for an anniversary dinner. The service was excellent, but the food didn't measure up to what we'd expect from a famous chef's tasting menu. We had the six-course tasting menu for $120 each and the dishes were surprisingly uninspiring, as if churned out from an assembly line. The poached lobster was not as good and the Wagyu beef sirloin was too salty for our taste. We did our best to enjoy the occasion, but wanted to be critical in this feedback because the chef really needs to innovate if the restaurant wants to retain its coveted top 10 spot among Washington DC restaurants.

“Exquisite Food, Elegant Ambiance, Exceptional Service”
Reviewed April 19, 2013

CityZen is our favorite restaurant in Washington DC. From the beautiful presentation of the food, to the modern interior decorating, everything is designed to please the eye and the palate. This is our special occasion restaurant. Whether it is an anniversary, birthday, out of town friends, or a book contract, the staff makes you feel that your day is just as special to them as it is to you. Rachel (our server) and Andy (the sommelier) made our experience last week just as wonderful as our first time there. Exquisite food, elegant ambiance, and exceptional service make our evenings at CityZen extraordinary every time.

The best restaurant I've ever eaten at. Perfect service. Attentive but not oppressive! Can't wait to return.

“a must-go restaurant”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

we have been to CityZen several times...we usually save it for special occasions and the restaurant always lives up to the occasion...CityZen is in a hotel; nevertheless, it is one of THE very best in Washington...the chef previously worked at Per Se and French Laundry...the food is just outstanding and the service so very friendly...I look forward to our next "occasion"

“The ingredients for a great meal were there ...”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

CitiZen tries hard. Our group of four had the tasting menu with wine pairings. The food was overall excellent and full of a tasteful mix of flavors ... but far too heavy on proteins with very little greens. The lobster was tough though. The wine pairings were a very interesting and a good match for the food flavors ... but consisted of unknown inexpensive wines. Our waitress gave us very attentive, friendly and efficient service ... but each of our six courses was delivered by kitchen staff who muttered quickly what was on the platter in a totally impersonal and memory-recital manner. Noone offered me a second cup of coffee, which I wanted, at the end. Given the $555 bill for each couple, I had expected a more flawless evening, a better choice of foods and better wines. It did not help that, despite my request and their assurances, noone had called for our car from the valet service, located a few feet away from the restaurant exit, when we left.
