“Great collection of American art”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

Located off the Mall and housed with the National Portrait Gallery, this is another great Smithsonian museum well worth a visit.

Devoted completely to American art, the museum represents more than 7,000 artists. Some of my favorites include Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Childe Hassam, Mary Cassatt, Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Hopper and Albert Bierstadt.

“An unexpected highlight”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

We stopped at the American Art Museum mostly due to it's location across the street from the Spy Museum. We ended up considering it one of the highlights of our trip. There was a small and well selected exhibition of patent models that were really interested. The folk art section had a variety of traditional folk art and quirky outsider art. Everywhere we ended up, we found some object or detail worth examining. We particularly loved the model of the museum entitled MVSEVM that was a fantastic miniature representation with so many details we could have stayed there all afternoon. The building itself is gorgeous - the atrium is beautiful, and surprisingly uncrowded. The gift shop was even better than most museum shops we had viewed during the trip - well selected and unusual items.

Liked it all...so big that the crowds are spread throughout the museum. The sculpture gardens are so peaceful and a nice place to sit and rest. The rooms are well marked indicating what period of art and what type of art and all free!

“This museum houses some real treats!”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

The chronological exhibit of presidential portraits, I find to be a highlight. There is usually some temporary exhibit in the galleries directly after the presidents (When I visited, it was the Outwin Boocheever Portrait Competition Finalists... a great show that will be up a while longer. Check on available exhibits that will be on during your stay.)

Also, a highlight for me is the large collection 19th Century art (but there is a good selection of Contemporary & Modern Art for those of you who tend toward that)

There is a lovely courtyard where you can sit & rest a while after a day of museum going. And there is a café available for casual fare. (Though it closes earlier than does the museum.)

It is nice that this museum is open a bit later (11:30am-7:00pm) than those on the National Mall (close between 5:00-5:30pm)

This is a worthwhile museum to visit! I've spent the better part of a day here, though I am a painter & spend much time with the paintings I enjoy. I would estimate you could allow two hours & get a good visit in.
