We enjoyed our brief visit to the American Art Museum. At the time, we saw a fascinating exhibit by artist Nam June Paik. Fantastic. The museum is not too large, with interesting contemporary art. Attached to the Portrait Gallery, so you get two museums in one. The building is gorgeous. Worth a trip.

It's quiet and free and has some delightful artwork that is not only enjoyable for its artistry, but also gives insights into the faces, people and places of America's past, from pre-Revolution to the recent past.

There are examples of naive folk art, unnervingly lifelike portraits and amazing depictions of the new frontiers of the west, as well as the cities of the east in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Well worth a few hours.

We visited to see the Civil War exhibit and really enjoyed it. Didn't see anymore of the museum just the Civil War. Close to metro stop and lots of restaurants

We toured as a family and my oldest daughter found great inspiration in the various works of art. Guests are permitted to photograph much of the permanent collection, which allowed my daughter to take pics of several works and study them when she returned home. Touring and private collections were also phenomenal. I have no doubt that we'll return.

This museum is connected to the National Portrait Gallery. So you can see two easily on one visit. The courtyard between the two is covered for year-round use. A verypleasant place to purchase a coffee or a meal or to read and to relax. No entrance fee for either. Many exhibits at one time so one is sure to interest you. Some exhibits are as small as one room. Others are as small as two photos. Right now, there are two photo portraits of President Obama. Also on view is a display devoted of Amelia Earhart. The group of patent models is awe inspiring
