Enjoyed the food & the service a very pleasant experience. Easy to miss it's located underneath the Baskin Robbins Ice cream shop. Portions were great & the spring rolls were wonderful.

“Authentic Gourmet Chinese underneath Baskin Robbins”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

There are 2 kinds of Chinese restaurants in America; fast food and fine dining. While menus at Chinese restaurants are almost identical in every city, gourmet restaurants offer authentic Chinese cuisine or creative fusion recipes.
Mr. Chen's is a fine example of authentic gourmet Chinese cuisine. As an expert on Chinese food, I can recommend this restaurant to those seeking an alternative to chop suey or beef and broccoli.
You must order the Peking Duck Rolls from the appetizers menu. This is Mr. Chen's best item by far. Whether you're a guest at the nearby Marriott or a local foodie willing to go out to the Zoo for something new, this dish is an unbelievable bargain that tastes very delicious.
My entree was Salmon & Bean Curd. This lovely dish has a pepper by its name on the menu, but you can order it "no spicy" and enjoy thick chunks of salmon and savory tofu prepared with a tangy sauce.
The manager does not mind if you go upstairs to Baskin Robbins and bring down a mango-banana smoothie to enjoy with your meal.
Don't be afraid of the word "organic" which appears on the restaurant's name. Yes, you can find that obscure purple fried rice here but there are plenty of other interesting options that you don't have to be a yoga master to enjoy.
This is one of those rare Chinese restaurants where you should make every effort to order something that you have not tried before. Panda's Delight, for example, is perfect for vegetarians. Ming Shrimp is a delight for seafood lovers.
The prices are quite reasonable. There are over 100 items on the menu and none are over $13.
I don't write many restaurant reviews, so you know this place must be something special if even Confucius is raving about it! Mr. Chen's is not a fancy restaurant if you're trying to impress with ambience, but if it's simply an extraordinary meal you're seeking then this is the Chinese restaurant you've always wanted to try.

“Good & plenty”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

Mr. Chen's on Connecticut Ave. is right around the corner from the Woodley Park Metro station. You have to go down some steps in order to enter their restaurant. I was there during the 4th of July week-end around 1:00 pm, & I was the only patron, which to me, wasn't a very good sign; I was wrong.
I ordered the Szechuan chicken which was on the luncheon specials. The waiter asked me if I wanted it hot, knowing that some people do not equate Szechuan with the "warmth" of their dishes. I said yes, and in a very few minutes, my meal of chicken, rice, & an order of spring rolls arrived at the table. Everything was perfect. The prices were reasonable & the atmosphere was what you would expect at just about any Chinese restaurant.
If I had more time to spend in D.C., I would have come back here again.

“Great Food, but Dining Area Stuffy”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

Excellent Chinese food; our four guests all enjoyed their meals. The restaurant door was open and the air conditioning was not doing its job; I recommend going later in the evening when it is cooler (or order take-out!)

“Good Chines Food NO MSG”
Reviewed April 27, 2013

This particular Chines restaurant is the only one my wife can eat at because every other chines place we have been to cooks with msg and it makes her sick every time. This place however does not cook with msg and the food is just as good as any other chines restaurant. Those there is not much else that sets this place a part from any other chines restaurant other than it serves organic food, the service is quite friendly.
