“upscale greek dining”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2014

I have never been a fan of Greek cuisine, but Mourayo has converted me! Our party of 4 dined on a Friday evening (we had made reservations), and were promptly seated. We started with a wonderfully flavorful feta cheese in sesame seeds on an apricot honey puree, and a tasty grilled octupus salad with "ink" vinagrette, in a stunning presentation (see photo). Our entrees included a delicious duck mousaka, a monk fish and a grouper dish, both outstanding; they obviously know how to cook seafood without it coming out dry or chewy. We were too full to try their desserts, but I look forward to saving room next time! Reasonably priced entrees in the $20-30 range; our total bill (including wine but before tip) was $184.

“Weekday, slow but comfort food yes”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 16, 2014

Went during the week ... Be aware kitchen is slow .... Chalk it up to individual meal preparation. Conversation kills the wait.? But you can struggle to hear at bigger tables (3abreast).
Good meal: had lamb chops, branzano, scallops, pork loin and pasta. Saw whole fish served after skin & bones removed. No starters just entrees. Good side veggy combo to the entee. No desert, just coffee.
Bar for sitting eating or meeting. Wine available if you want; cocktails too. Restrooms clean but downtown stairs. Off Dupont Circle, so parking is available but you have to look for it.
Separate dinning room available; few back tables by bar.
Comfortable atmosphere ......

“Very good Greek food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 16, 2014

If you think "gyros" when you think Greek, Mourayo will come as a pleasant surprise. Although the dishes are still what some might call plain old Greek cooking, the ingredients and preparation make for some very good food. My wife and I are new to the neighborhood and made a last minute reservation on what turned out to be a very busy Friday night. Still, when we asked, we got a great little table right by the window so we could watch the street action as we ate. We had the Melitzanosalata and Salata Santorini for starters, and the Giouvetsi stin Gastra (lamb stew) and Pythagoras “Theorema” (pork loin medallions) for our mains. Everything was great. We drank a very nice Greek wine, too - the Mitravales Estate. The only off note was that the place got crowded fast and the volume level was quite high. After a while it was hard to carry on a conversation. But that also speaks to the popularity of Mourayo; a popularity well-deserved in my opinion.

“Decent food, some service bumps”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2014

Started off with a drink at the bar, which was accompanied by spiced olives, a nice touch, except the toothpicks that accompanied the olives were wrapped in plastic. I ordered the Kavouropita (which resembled crab rangoon from a carryout, in a sort-of good one), Salata Santorini (forgettable), and Lavraki me Aginares (I'd eat again), which did not come out in that order, leading to a crowded table.

I likely wouldn't return or recommend with the other options in the area and DC unless someone was specifically requesting Greek.

“The best Greek restaurant I have ever been too”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2014

Let's face it, the Greeks aren't neessarily know for their culinary prowess, but Mourayo seems to take traditional dishes and add a modern twist. It really is worth a visit and was recommended by our Guest House as their favourite restaurant. If on the menu, try the poached pear, simple but really good. One confusing aspect was the Greek Wine List, but we went with the waitors recommendation and it worked well. I think the menu has special offerings on a Thurs night.
