We visited this monument as part of our Big Bus Walking Tour - our guide explained the arrangement of the names of the states and how the monument was laid out. And while the general history of how the US was engaged during WWII is (i would expect) well known, our guide was able to point out several really interesting features of the memorial that relate to some of the more subtle elements of the US war effort.

See if you can find Kilroy at the monument :)

I don't know if guides can be hired through the WWII Memorial office, but I'd recommend them for this and for the Vietnam memorial (which is also very interesting).

This is right across the reflecting pool from the Lincoln memorial. So do one or the other, then walk along the reflecting pool and do the other.

The WWII memorial is really beautiful - and huge! Go at night when it is lit and it is simply amazing.

We were lucky enough to be with a school group while visiting the National World War II Memorial so we were able to learn much more about the reliefs on each side of the memorial, depicting American life during World War II. While you are there, be sure also to use the computers to look up any relatives that served in the war as we did.

This memorial was long overdue. I'm so glad future generations will have this as a reminder of the millions who served our country and fought for the freedom of many throughout the world. Words just can't express the feelings and emotions I have when I go here.

Take time to have a good walk around this memorial. Its so beautiful and tranquil and a lot of thought has gone into the design. The tribute paid to fallen soldiers is apparent and their memory will live on forever here. Its a must see for any visitor.
