If you have seen other museums dedicated to American Indians, you will find this museum a let down. If you have not visited other museums, it's a very good start to understanding Indian culture and life generally. However, because it attempts to look at Indian culture generally (in all regions of the country), much of the information and many of the exhibits seemed rather basic. By comparison, several years ago we visited with Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. Its exhibits on the the Plains Indians were far more thorough and enlightening.

The outside architecture is the first clue to hoe great this will be. Exhibits were detailed and beautifully put together. Staff was friendly. Had Mexican hot chocolate (spicy) and fry bread w/ honey. Very tasty.

This museum is mostly contemporary art which is ...disappointing. The architecture of the actual building is nicer than the inside. The art is sparse and the story told is superficial at best. We could have done better with this one.

We love this museum. How the Indian lived, how they were treaded and how they live today. History you should know because the white men was not very nice to the Natives in America (and all over the world). And the culture before Colombus was rich and amazing. illegal immigration since 1492.
The gift shop is very big and nice.

Amazing place starting with the architecture of the building and ending with a new appreciation of the range of indigenous cultures in the Americas. Most impressive were the 4th floor displays curated by individual tribal groups designed to tell the story they wanted known. The Brazilian soapstone sculptures near the entrance to the gift shop are inspiring. A must see on a visit to DC.
