Mixtec is one of my top two favorite Mexican restaurants in Washington, DC. The other is Rosa Mexicana, which expanded from New York City. It is not Tex Mex, but authentic home cooked Mexican food. I have not yet discovered a Mexican restaurant as good in even Los Angeles or Chicago, which have large Mexican populations. I usually order Cheese Enchiladas with Red and Green sauce. I also love the Mexican Hot Chocolate, and Mexican Chocolate Pudding Dessert. They all taste heavenly to me. My only complaint is they don't make this dessert every day, even though it is a regular menu item.

Wonderful Oaxacan mole. Very solid Mexican staples. Proprietor is extremely friendly and welcoming. Low key decor. Prices somewhat high for the setting (but not for the quality of the food). Right in the Center of Adams Morgan, near the corner of Columbia Road, 18th Street and Adams Mill. Parking can be tough in this neighborhood, so walk, take a cab, or park in the public lot about a block down on 18th Street, down an alley (very visible from the street). Good menu choices were any thing with the mouth watering mole, Seafood Veracruzana, the tortilla soup, guac, and queso fundido. Many tables enjoyed pitchers of Margaritas. Rather diverse crowd when we went.

Decent Mexican food. They stay loyal to authentic Mexican recipes, but quality is only okay. Plato Maya is decent (pork chops, pork taco, guacamole, refried beans, rice) but the Mexican rice served with it is mediocre at best. The tres leches is tasty, but nothing special. At $24, it's not a bargain, but not a rip-off by DC standards, and you get enough to fill you up.

I've been going to this restaurant most of my life- over thirty years. In all that time, have always had a good to great meal. My favorite is the Enchiladas Suizas. Its a great place for two or ten people. Its accomodating, warm, and authentic.

Completely unassuming, ma and pa operation in Adams Morgan. Food tastes great, prices are reasonable, menu has good range, the folks are kindly and welcoming. Highly recommended.
