My go-to DC coffee spot-- great atmosphere, great coffee, unbelievable biscuits (filling, but get one of each anyway), mostly fabulous service. One of the best parts is the passion and depth of knowledge of the staff people. They specialize in boutique grown, medium-roasts and they prepare their brew with care. Today, however, I got schooled by the grown man preparing my pour-over. I asked why they don't carry any dark roast blends. He responded that dark-roasting ruins coffee beans and that dark-roasted coffee lovers have deficient palates. A trifle incredulous, I asked whether it could possibly be true that he had never had a superb cup of dark-roasted coffee? He replied that he didn't drink coffee. How's that for a little house prejudice?
I'm still shaking my head but please don't let this one affected numbnut deter you. This place is great.
Can't speak to the cupcakes.
