“Our dinning experince in Obelisk”
Reviewed March 19, 2007

Last week we had a chance to dine in Obelisk. It is a small family type restaurant worth to visit at your next trip to Washington, DC. Be sure to make a reservation, because the place was packed. Even though the restaurant is small, we did not have a feeling of overcrowding. The food was simply excellent, starting from home baked bread and antipasti, trough choice of three items from appetizers, plati primi, plati secondi, to cheese sampling and desert. The service was not in par with food. The waitresses were cold, not very attentive and some of them lacking the basic hygienic rules. (After sneezing to their hands, not going to wash them. Handling bread, bread sticks and other food item with hands.)
Still we would go back for another culinary experience.

“Perfect dining experience”
Reviewed October 1, 2006

My husband and I recently dined at Obelisk to celebrate an anniversary, and it surpassed all of our expectations. The service was friendly and knowledgable, but not stuffy. The room is quiet and comfortable. And the food...well the food almost defies description. I will say that if you're looking for fettucine alfredo this isn't for you, but if the thought of gnocchi with suckling pig ragu makes your mouth water, you need to try Obelisk.

“A fantastic dining experience”
Reviewed May 20, 2006

Obelisk is a tremendous dining experience exhibiting the freshest and finest "Italian-esque" food to be found in the DC area. You must understand that Obelisk is all about the palate and about enjoying an entire gastronomic evening experience with your company in a relaxed setting, and it’s not at all about pomp and circumstance. The concept is a constantly changing (daily) 5-course prix-fixe menu (plus a few additional samples from the chef and homemade petifors at the conclusion) based on the freshest possible ingredients available which are assembled into mouthwatering inspirations of multiple layers of flavor by chef Pastan on that particular day. The setting is in one medium sized room on the main level of an old brownstone 1/2 block off of Dupont circle, and the ambiance seems to reflect the idea of eating dinner at a close friend's house. The entire room only seats about 30 people. Therefore, it can, at times, get slightly noisy. However, we found that the quaint and cozy atmosphere along with the very personalized, non-stuffy service really fit well with the whole concept. The servers and hostess were amazingly knowledgeable about every aspect of each dish and about the very impressive, yet restrained, almost-entirely-Italian wine list. Although a few native Italians may say that some of the dishes are too creative to be 100% authentically Italian, the quality, taste, and originality of the food creates a symphony on the palate that ranks as highly in our minds as that of Maestro, Restaurant 2941, and Restaurant Eve, but in a much more relaxed setting. And, at around $65 per person (without drinks), Obelisk is definitely one of the best-valued and highly rated dining experiences in town! An absolute “must-do,” if you can ever get a reservation.

“Bountiful Choices”
Reviewed May 12, 2006

Tucked in a brownstone is the small, intimate, and splendid Obelisk. This winter season we entered the dining room and were welcomed by the warm, earthly smells of baking bread, fruits and the appetizers displayed on plates in the center table. This is a splendid restaurant for vegetarians and meat eaters; excellent vege terrines, fragrant fish dishes, plus duck, rabbit, beef and lamb. The wine list is small, but very excellent, many fine quality lower cost Rossa di Montalcinos, Barberas, and clean crisp whites, all at excellent values. To start, order a number of the small plates, nutty, creamy parmigiano on crisp biting greens, golden beets, with a hidden spice intriguing the palate, pasta sauces that make you want to lick the bowl. The theme is Italian, and it reminded me of a number of excellent restaurants off the Via Veneto in Rome, where the evening's appetizers are displayed when you enter, partly to awaken a palate deadened by a day of work, to liven the eyes and peak the nares, but also to display the seasons bounty. This is a restaurant to return to, and even though I made a pact to always choose new choices, I have returned to Obelisk, up the stairs, open the door and give yourself over to the pleasure of great dining.
