I had a great meal at the Hawk & Dove, where I tried the crabcakes. The service was excellent, although I was at the restaurant early, before the crowds arrived. When they did come, I felt rather old, having crossed well beyond the under 30 singles set that crowded into the restaurant and around the bar! Definitely a place for young professionals to have a good beer and meet others! And when they arrive it gets noisy.

Oldtimers may be disappointed by the squeaky-clean Hawk N Dove on Capitol Hill. My recollection from years ago was that it was smokey, smelly, and sticky--a proper retreat for congressional staffers, students and assorted grifters (like Marion Berry). It has been cleaned up, perhaps more appropriate for the refined sensibilities of Gen Y, or old fogies on the wrong side of 50 (like me). Fittingly, I stopped in for brunch, rather than a liquid lunch. I had the fried chicken and french toast. It was good, but I prefer Gladys Knight's chicken and waffles down in Atlanta. All in all, the place was fairly standard; nothing extraordinary, but OK.

A great neighborhood place, under new ownership remodeled at great expense. Waitstaff cheerful, quick and professional. Prices seem high, but servings are large. We've visited twice: First, shortly after reopening, Second a few weeks later. Food quality declined somewhat in the interim. Chili should be served hot, not warm; Kennebec fries could be less salty; pan-baked sticky buns should be swimming in melted butter and brown sugar.

Of course we're returning. This is our favorite place on Pennsylvania, though a walk down to 8th Street will bring you among four or five places somewhat better than this.

Burgers were good but sticky buns were awful, service kind of slow. It took much longer then it should have to get our deserts. Menu is very yuppy, brunch menu looked pretty good.

Let's face it: at the end of its previous life, the Hawk and Dove was a dump. Not a dive, but a dirty old bar with lousy food and a terrible atmosphere. Xavier has done an outstanding job on the place--keeping the feel, but cleaning it up and making the food more than edible. The flatbreads are incredibly tasty as are the soups. The decor gives you the same homey feel, but he has opened up the place by getting rid of those cramped and dusty little rooms. The staff is courteous and the place is very well run by GM Jack McAuliffe. It's absolutely a step up from the old place and bring Pa Ave. another good spot to hang out and enjoy the Hill.
