We came back to M & S during a quick visit to DC. We had eaten there last year during cherry blossom season and had had a really incredible meal. We made reservations for an earlier dinner, and were seated at a booth. It was pretty crowded for early on a Saturday night.

We heard a bunch of waiters yelling at each other repeatedly throughout our visit-arguing about who was taking what area, etc. It was very unprofessional. One of the reasons we came back was the great service. . .which was definitely below par this time.

I got a mixed drink, which was average, and the smaller filet mignon. It was great and perfectly cooked! However, it came with "steamed" vegetables that were covered in butter. I would recommend asking for them to be cooked plain. I thought steamed implied plain, but I guess not.

My husband got the 9 oz sirloin (again, perfectly cooked) with mashed potatoes. They looked absolutely disgusting- the butter/oil was floating around in the dish, separated from the potatoes. He said that they tasted just "okay". The appearance was very unsettling, though.

After declining dessert (but ordering coffee), the waiter repeatedly tried to rush us out of our booth. It was starting to get busier, but there were plenty of open tables. He rushed us through our entire meal. . . not sure why.

The steaks are good, but honestly, just get them to go or eat at the bar.

Have visited this particular M&S Grill about once a year over it's lifetime. I don't know if the takeover by Landry is to "blame," but neither this place nor the two sister McCormick and Schmicks I've been to in the past year in DC and National Harbor are up to their old standards. Very average meal in presentation, flavor and quality. Waiter was good. I had shrimp stuffed with crab which came with green beans and shredded carrots (nicely prepared) and mashed potatoes (good with the gravy from someone else's dinner) but "dry" on their own. The fried calamari appetizer was 'padded' with sweet potato chips and peppers, also deep fried like the calamari; the shrimp cocktail had 5 shrimp but mine was limp. Friend had pot roast...dry pieces of sliced beef which she said was a bit salty once the gravy was put on it. My husband thought the steak at Outback is better than the one he had here. Another friend had crab cakes; not as good as what he makes...they looked nicely pan-seared but pretty homogenous crab meat (no big hunks). We four shared the apple pie with cinnamon ice cream...the best of everything we had here; the pie was piping hot and the ice cream a generous scoop. All in all, I, and the others, was disappointed that the former quality is no longer here. We will not go back. Others may agree, the dining room, for a Saturday night at 7p was nearly empty. When we left a bit before 9, one dining section was closed, the bar was empty and the only other patrons were in the front room. Another sign, no more valet parking...guess there isn't enough volume!

After touring the monuments in DC was looking for a nice resturant and walk up on M&S Grills. As we enter it was very comfortable. The places wasn't pack but we was really early. The services was great and our waitress was very friendly. The apps were on point. The meals was really really good. When you have chef with you and she tell you that it really good than you know the food is on point. Didn't get any desert but I bet it would be really good. The prices is really expensive but well worth it. I really enjoy my time and enjoy the food.

The M&S Grill is conveniently located near the White House. The atmosphere and decor are upscale and what you would expect in the lobbying capital of the world. The food and service are good, but not great. Our group tried the calamari - not bad but hardly memorable. It's served with thin cut sweet potato fries. We all agreed that no one would have been able to tell what was it was if we had not asked the waiter. They were lightly coated and fried perfectly, they just didn't taste like anything. For entrees, we tried the salmon, BBQ chicken and ribs combo, half roasted chicken and a porterhouse steak. All were prepared well and were fine. The only item everyone agreed was exceptional was the coleslaw. The BBQ sauce on both the chicken and ribs was overly sweet for our taste and was probably out of the same bottle you can buy at your local grocery store. The salmon was cooked perfectly, but also lacked any distinctive flavor despite the glaze. The steak was smaller than expected for the price ($38) but was cooked to the correct temperature and was fine.

The M&S Grill is a little pricey, but not by D.C. standards. One thing about the service to keep in mind - it's fast. Our waiter moved everything along quickly. Maybe they have an award for turning tables over the fastest. If you want to take your time, tell your waiter - otherwise they'll move your meal along quicker then you might want or expect.
