A very refined restaurant with excellent food. Old world decore. It should be no surprise that it is expensive. I felt that it was worth it. A friend made the booking but it seems difficult to get a reservation on a Saturday night.

This will be a shorty, because I have reviewed this restaurant before, but on a re-visit i was struck by the fact that the maitre d's actually do work - they quietly move about and survey the rooms, making sure everything is taken care of. So many places skimp on staff and there is no one to watch the room. Not so here. Of special mention were the excellent brussels sprouts and tiny scallops. Just go and revel in excellence, and for 50 years.

This was meant to be one of the highlights of our trip to Washington but it was overpriced , and the food was average at best. The staff were very attentive, and the young lady that served us was very delightful. The Diver Scallops I had as a starter were nicely cooked and well presented. The Loin of Lamb we both had as main course was not a great cut , a little bit chewy ( not very tender ) . The best part of the meal was something we did not pay for , the Amuse Bouch before the starter. , a small cup of Butternut Squash Soup with Vanilla Cream . This was delightful ! We also found the layout of the place a bit shambolic, including a hike up to the 3rd floor( I think ) for the restrooms . Don't get me wrong I don't mind paying for quality , but this came to 213 dollars plus tip .I would not visit again.

This restaurant occupies three floors of an historic old building, some stair climbing will be required. Apart for that drawback for some with disabilities, the place is first-rate.

If coming from downtown DC by cab, ask the driver to cut across the Georgetown University campus to save time.

The food quality, preparation, and service were outstanding. I particularly recommend the mushroom crepes.

Six of us dined together. We all had different dishes, and no one was disappointed.

1789 in Georgetown will not disappoint. It has the atmosphere of an old historic inn and fine dining service. While it is not inexpensive, the preparation and presentation of your menu selections is outstanding. 1789 has a nice wine list and includes some very good reasonable priced bottles. Of note if you have to drive to Georgetown, 1789 provides complimentary free valet parking. This is consistently a top dining choice and a special restaurant.
