Ate outside for a nice lunch during restaurant week. The pork chop entree was perfect and so was the apple crisp dessert. I'm a huge fan of the Vidalia onion tart appetizer. I only wish I ate inside to experience the ambiance of such a well-known address on PA Ave.

“Great Wedding Rehearsal Dinner Place”
Reviewed June 8, 2008

We scheduled the rehearsal dinner for my cousin's wedding at this restaurant. Many relatives came from across the country to join us in the joyous event. The menu looked amazing and when I actually tried each thing in the offerings, everything was excellent! The atmosphere is one of a rarefied, 19th century which takes one back to a simpler yet more elegant era. Nearly every political bigwig has eaten in this august place and it seems to invite gossip and intrigue. The service here is equally terrific and the staff couldn't have been more deferential nor accomodating. I really love this place and will make it a point to return when i am next in DC. You could do far worse for a "Washington experience" type restaurant.

“A Promising Meal Ruined by Inattentive and Poor Service”
Reviewed April 25, 2008

It was a lovely April day and I stopped at Occidental to have lunch with a friend of mine. We received the drinks and appetizer promptly, but then another 40 minutes passed without service. The server walked by several times without acknowledging us or telling us what the timeframe would be to receive the meal. Meanwhile, many other guests who arrived after us received their meals.

After 50 minutes had passed we asked for the check and to cancel the order. No response. I've never done this before, but stood up, walked to the front and asked the greeter to assist us. She said she needed to speak with the manager. We estimated the cost of what we had received and left her with the cash although she protested that she could not accept it. This experience would be unacceptable at McDonald's much less such a highly reputed restaurant. Shameful, and will never return.
