“Finally a decent restaurant near the Kennedy Center”
Reviewed March 19, 2013 via mobile

Comfortable, attractive bar adjacent to restaurant. Great ood in the Kinkead tradition and excellent service. When presented with the bill, I discovered that my two glasses of wine had been inadvertently left off the bill. When I pointed it out to the maitre d', he thanked me for my honesty and comped the wine. Good customer relations. The salad was inventive and lightly dressed. The pasta was perfect. I will be back.

“Bob Kinkead's new DC Ancora restaurant”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

Bob Kinkead, well known for his Kinkeads restarant in DC and Colvins Run in Tysons Corner VA, two of the top restaurants in the area for years, has opened Ancora, a new restaurant in DC, across from the Kennedy Center in the Watergate office building. Ancora has excellent ambience, Kinkead's usual excellent kitchen and reasonable prices, a combination hard to resist. The noise level is subdued, allowing conversation at a normal speakng level, almost a rarity in our local restaurants.
Kinkead's menu is heavier on fish, which is a specialty of his, than the usual menu, but there are plenty of other choices to satisfy even non-fish eaters such as myself. The best thing on the menu is the veal shin, a large piece of veal for two or more people, presented with a flourish at table side, accompanied by something new to me, flash-fried whole artichokes, which must be tasted to believe. The outer leaves, which are usually discarded, are like potato chips and consumed entirely. An unbelievable dish! If you are ordering dishes that don't come with the artichoke includeed, you can order them as a side dish--and you should. There is an Italian bias to the menu, with many pasta choices. The ones my companions have ordered have been uniformly excellent. Highly recommended.

“Not just a good place to eat before the Kennedy Center -- a good place to eat!”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

Literally right across the street from the Kennedy Center at the Watergate complex is a new and exceedingly welcome addition to the DC dining scene -- Ancora restaurant, opened by the creator of the now-no-longer Kinkead's Restaurant. Any dedicated Kennedy Center-goer knows that the food in the Ken Cen itself is sadly second-rate, served in rather soul-less surroundings, offered in a hurry before the performance. Ancora, by contrast, has an appealing, textured setting at street level, knowledgable and accomodating staff, and unusual and pleasing Italian food. We had as a starter, for example, grilled octopus, perfectly cooked, so it was not charred except just the perfect light touch on the very outside, leaving the interior moist and delicious, almost runny, served with a complex, carefully prepared, and definitely not at all overwhelming sauce, together with a few bits of micro greens and a few pieces of fennel. The table had quite a run on the rabbit, which -- despite being misspelled on the menu as "conilio" rather than "coniglio" -- was also well cooked and NOT overcooked, a risk with rabbit -- with pleasing accompaniements. Our resident wine expert pronounced the list balanced, interesting, and not over-priced. We had a tiny kerfuffle at the very end, when we needed to pay so we could trot across for the curtain and our waiter was otherwise occupied, but we managed to roust him out and complete the paperwork in sufficient time. As of the day of our visit they did not have valet parking, but there are a couple of Watergate garages very close by. Ours stayed open long enough so that we simply left our car there and walked back to get it after the show, managing to avoid most of the post-show traffic to boot. (Ancora contributes $6 to the patron's parking fee, so the cost was less than the Kennedy Center's garage.)
