“Fantastic venue for concerts - and Dinner!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2013

My wife and I attended a Jefferson Starship concert at the newly renovated Howard Theatre (in between the U Street Corridor and Howard University), and we LOVED it. the venue is fabulous for watching live shows, and the history is palpable... all of the jazz greats performed there, and you can see why... there's not a bad seat in the house. They open their doors two hours before the event so that you can pick your seat and order dinner, and the food is a tad pricey; but very good. We love our experience there, and I highly recommend it.

“El Gran Combo 50th Anniversary”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

Attended the Howard Theatre to see El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico in concert. The show was great! The theatre is a beautiful venue and the concert was great. No bad seat in the house. The sound system was great and even though not needed, the two big screen TVs enhanced the viewing experience. We were seated right away and the show started exactly at the scheduled time. Based on other reviews, we ate before the show. Drink prices are a little steep ($10 for screwdriver). After the concert was finished, they kept playing salsa over the music system. They closed the bar after the live music ended but quickly realized that was not a good move. Many people (including us) stayed and were dancing. They reopened the bar quickly.

“Great sound, fine seating for all, good food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2013

In March the two of us enjoyed the Booker T Jones concert at the Howard Theatre. Booker T and his band put on a great show, don’t miss him if you get the chance. If you read his bio, you’ll be impressed with the success and length of his career.

But this review is really about the Howard Theatre. Our experience at the Howard was so good, if you see an artist you want to enjoy, and is performing at the Howard, do not hesitate to get tickets at this venue.

Though we’ve been to DC many times, this was our first to the Howard. Getting to the Howard is great. It is really close to the Shaw/Howard Metro Subway station on the yellow and green lines. From the Metro station you first walk a 3/4 block north up 7th street, then a right turn east onto T street and a half block walk to the brightly lit up white Howard facade.

Recently renovated, the Howard is in great condition and a very intimate theatre. Judging the floor, it is hard to imagine being dissatisfied with your seat, no one is far from the stage and there are no columns or railings to impede your view. The sound system was excellent and the sound was: well balanced, you could hear every instrument and every vocal mic; clear with no distortion, no hint of feedback, and the sound level was just right, loud enough to feel like a live concert, yet not uncomfortable. Kudos to the sound engineers.

Although many reviews emphasize getting here really early, this concert was not heavily attended so arriving near the concert time would have worked with the open seating policy. We were seated three rows from the stage, direct center and it was excellent visually and aurally. Generally you do not want to seated next to the stage as you won’t hear adequately blended sound.

We did eat dinner including some wine. The wine was maybe 3-4 ounces and good quality for house wines. We ordered the Shrimp on Grits and the Crab Cake Sandwich, both tasty and typical DC prices. Service was a little slow, so the bar forewent another round of drinks we might have ordered, but maybe staff was thin due to the low ticket sales (it was a Tuesday night), and a major snow storm warning of a total DC shutdown the next day.

We would absolutely head back to the Howard for any artist we wanted to view. So kudos to the financial folks who supported this renovation.

“Loved the experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 21, 2013

Went here over Valentine's Weekend to see Kenny Lattimore. Wow! There really is no bad seat in the house. We got there early anticipating a large crowd, but were in our seats within 10 minutes of arriving to stand in line. The only downside is that they definitely try to pack as many people into this place as possible especially down in the orchestra seating area.

The sound quality was excellent and the lighting was great. Food was actually not bad and the staff was very attentive throughout the entire night. I can't wait for the next show at the Howard Theater.
