Description: The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish. Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker. A bipartisan favorite, we have occupied the nation’s capital since 1995, anchored across from the Verizon Center and around the corner from the International Spy Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Chinatown. Make waves at our racetrack-shaped bar or sup on seafood underneath the hull-like ceiling in our restaurant’s main dining room. Either way, be presidential and order a cup of our New England Clam Chowder; it’s been served at every Inauguration since 1981. Other accolades include “Best Place for Great Seafood” (Washingtonian Magazine, 2008) and “Best Crab Cakes” (Washingtonian Magazine, 2008)

“Always fresh and good”

My Mom loves to visit Legal Seafood when she comes to the East Coast. On our trip to Boston last year as in DC, Legal Seafood remains a "must go" for our family. We are quite partial to the fried shrimp, onion strings, mashed potatoes, broccoli and the crab dip! Everything is well-prepared, plentiful and worth every penny! It's my favorite of the seafood restaurants!

“Sadly not up to usual Legal Seafood standard”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2013

We dined here with high hopes and expectations having had superb food (and allergy friendly) in Boston. Alas, this did not prove to be the case in DC even on a very quiet night when the place was half empty.

We had delicious pinot blanc wine, but that was the highlight. Our fried and battered seafood platter was cold (some mussels were v cold in the middle) and slightly greasy. i had seen it on the counter where it sat for some time before the host took it initially to another part of the restaurant before bringing it to us. Our second dish was a vey oily gratin-type dish, which, whilst it did have quite nice scallops and lobster in it, wasn't the lovely seafood stew with mussels and shell-on lobster in a tomato bisque we had ordered.

All in, we were sadly disappointed with the overall experience as it was so, so out of kilter with other branches.

“Legal, well, not so much”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 5, 2013

Our dinner experience was not the best. To start with, the reservation was made for a party of 7. When we were escorted to the table, we found that they intended to accommodate us NEXT TO THE KITCHEN, I was shocked and requested to be assigned to another table. Since the place was empty, they graciously accede to the request . From the menu, I asked the waitress what dish she could recommend. Well, that was a big mistake. The food was uneatable, the manager took that out of the tab and asked if I would like something else. We were 7 on the table, and the rest of the party were not enjoying their dishes either, so I decline the offer. To add more salt to the injury, a beer was dropped over one of the persons who doesn't drink, her food, hair, coat, everything got spilled over. Once more they apologize about the situation, however, the experience was not a positive one, therefore, it's a place that I won't return neither recommend to anybody.

“Just not as good as their other locations”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2013

We've been Legal Sea Food fans for years, having been to Boston locations many times and also to King of Prussia in PA. Something was just not right the night we came to the DC restaurant. The fried clams were disappointing, almost tasted like they'd been frozen. Also tried the special of the night, red snapper; the spicy sauce and rice were tasty, but the fish was, like the clams, disappointing - dry, overcooked, lacking flavor. We'd been so pleased to happen across the restaurant after a day at the nearby Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, expecting the usual outstanding Legal fare. It did not happen this time around.

“Red lobster prices with much better flavor.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2013 via mobile

Prices are no more expensive than red lobster but the food is so much better. Our waiter t.j. was very nice and efficient. Located in Chinatown so this was neat for us as tourists. The wood grilled trio is a steal for the price and the shrimp stuffed won tons are delicious. Great place.
