We have lived in the Washington, DC, metro area for more than 25 years. We have been visiting the market from almost the beginning. This is one of the most interesting places to see a cross section of residents of the city. There are customers from all quadrants of the city. It is a great place for tourists as well because it is near the L' Enfant plaza metro station. You also get to meet the fishmongers who mostly hail from the seafood culture of Eastern Maryland like Smith Island.

There are several vendors selling ready to eat seafood as well as those selling uncooked product. We especially enjoy the quality of the product sold by Captain White's, one of the long time vendors there. We purchase all sorts of things from Carolina shrimp, clams, oysters, fish and for special occasions whole lobsters. There products are first rate in freshness with very competitive prices. We enjoy bringing things home and cooking them and having wonderful family dinners. We enjoy ourselves and these are some of the best memories for our family. We all know how important it is to bring your family together around the table! Go visit and bring something healthy home for dinner!

If you like seafood, this is the place for you! Since there was no table, we ate the oysters and clams on the street while waiting for the lobsters to be steamed. We then brought the lobsters and shrimps back to the hotel and finished every possible part of the seafood we had. It was so good that we went back to the Market the same day and bought some soup and crabs for dinner. Everything was so fresh and delicious in the Market! It was one of the highlights of my trip in DC!

It's very colorful, filled with many kinds of seafood, much or most of which did not originate anywhere near DC. Compared to the markets in certain New England fishing town and other places where you can buy or eat what was actually caught that day, this place is severely lacking. Perhaps the crabs are good, since they are most likely to be local and fresh. It's worth looking at if you happen to be in the area, but you can have better food more comfortably elsewhere.

We got a lot of steamed crabs; fantastic and value for money. We got oysters as well, and steamed lobsters. Jessie and Taylor was the most popular, and great as well. A must-go for seafood lovers, and the highlight of my trip in Washington DC. Do note that there are no tables, so we stood and ate at the sidewalk, but we enjoyed it nevertheless.

My husband and I stopped at the fish market to pick up food for dinner that evening. The main parking lot was full, so we parked on the street at a meter. We only had enough change for 11 minutes, so we had to hurry. We went directly to Captain White's and ordered their clams casino and clam chowder. I wouldn't call them clams casino. I'd call the clams stuffies or stuffed clams as they consisted of chopped clams, breadcrumbs and seasonings. They were very good. However, the clam chowder was more like a potato chowder with no seasoning. I'd pass on that the next time. The good news is that we were able to get waited on and served in less than 11 minutes.
