“Oh What a Beautiful Morning...........”
Reviewed March 8, 2012

We spent 4 nights at the Mandarin Oriental in D.C. and we had a wonderful time! Upon waking the first morning and opening the drapes to our amazing view of the Jefferson Memorial and surrounding areas was just breathtaking. Even in the dead of winter we could not have asked for a better view.
And I have to mention how comfortable our room was. After sightseeing all day and to come back to such elegance and fine appointments really was the icing on the cake. The bathtub was so relaxing and the entire bathroom was very spacious and well thought out.
Also the location is very good. With in walking distance to many Museums and Monuments. From the staff at the hotel and the restaurants, rooms and location I would highly recommend The Mandarin Oriental.

Room Tip: Ask for a water view. It so much fun to see the boats and monuments from your room.

We live in DC and had to move out of our house so they could replace our hardwoods and carpet for two days, we have a 13yr old lab so finding pet-friendly hotel was key. The staff at the MO DC from the bellman, valet, housekeeping, and executive club attendant were so kind and accomidating, the service and food are outstanding as well. I work from home so I spent 48 full hours in the hotel and utalized many of the services (gym, pool, restaurants) and it felt like a home not an uptight stiff luxuary hotel. Don't get me wrong MO DC is definitely luxury, but with a warm heart and comfortable feel! Definitely recommand

We went to DC for the weekend with our children--16, 6, and 4, and wanted a hotel in walking distance to the Smithsonian museums. This was a short walk, even with 3 kids. We have stayed in Hyatts and Marriotts when we are looking for a nice hotel. This was, BY FAR, the nicest hotel we have ever stayed in. We pulled up to see beautiful cherry blossom trees in front of the hotel, in early bloom. We were greeted outside by very friendly gentlemen who parked our car and brought our bags up. When we checked in, they gave us lovely scented warm towels to wipe our hands in. They gave my two youngest children little stuffed animals upon checkin. They allowed us to check in 2 hours early and gave us a free upgrade from a city view room to a water view room. We could see historic DC monuments and a beautiful view of the river from our window. We booked a Tai Pan Club level room--which I absolutely insist you must do. It is worth every penny to get this type of room. This included snacks and cocktails throughout the day, a really stellar happy hour with shrimp and beef and lots of other options, and a pretty great breakfast in the morning. Children were welcome but there were many business travelers as well. The rate was much better on the weekend--so take this into consideration if you are budgeting for the trip.
Everywhere we went, the staff smiled and called all of us by name, including my four year old. Doors were opened, we were greeted with "Welcome back!" when we came back from the museums, and they acted like we were their favorite folks in the world.
I took the kids to the indoor pool twice. They have these beautful round chairs that seat 3 people or more, which you can turn to face out the window to see the sun on the water, or towards the pool to watch the children playing. There were ladies in the pool working out as well, but it had plenty of room for everyone. To get to the pool, we walked by the fitness center, which my 16 year old used and said was very good, and through the entrance to the spa, which smelled heavenly.
They had many thoughtful touches with amenities at the hotel. By the pool, they had fruit and cold water with orange slices for a little flavor. They also had newspapers as well as very soft towels and floating toys for the children or moms. In the gym, they had water and towels for the completion of your workout.
Let me tell you about the bathroom in our room. It had a large lovely tub which all 3 of my kids went in together with their bathing suits on. There was a TV for them to watch while they took their bath. My little guy loved this so much that he took several baths while he was there. The entire bathroom had marble throughout and was very "zen." The shower was the nicest one I have used. The special faucet actually felt like a massage, or maybe standing outside in the rain if it were warm. We all used the shower a lot over the weekend as well.
On Saturday night, my husband and I went downstairs to listen to jazz music. This trip was actually in part to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and our 16 year old watched the two little ones so we could have a couple of hours of a "date night!" The jazz was beautiful and we enjoyed having time together. We then went back up to the Tai Pan Club which was open until 11 PM, and enjoyed cocktails and conversation.
They allowed us to have a late checkout with no extra charge. The regular checkout is 12 pm. They allowed us to stay until 4 pm and held our bags behind the desk for us.
Just everything about this hotel was so lovely. I wish that they had a Mandarin in every city. The experience was a little like seeing how the "other half" lives. Senators stay in this hotel, and the care that the staff takes with every guest seems to be on this level. Whether you travel all the time and are used to the finer things, or really want a special getaway, I truly recommend that you stay at the Mandarin Oriental in Washington DC.

Room Tip: Choose a Tai Pan Club level room. This is a must. It costs a little more, but read my review to se...

The Tai Pan Premier Water view room was fantastic. The hotel is wonderful, and was quite an experience. It's certainly expensive and not how I usually live, which perhaps made me appreciate it all the more. The Tai Pan Club amenities are a nice treat. It was a great place for a special, romantic weekend. (It is unfortunate that there are train tracks next door, but I thought other things about the hotel made up for that).

Room Tip: Rooms higher up are probably quieter vis-a-vis the trains; if you're on a lower floor, you might...

I am a Ritz Carlton fan, so I was was hesitant to leave my comfort zone, but my partner has been coming here for business for the last couple of years and has raved about it. So I joined him for a long weekend. Wow, what a property. It's within walking distance of the Mall, but is tucked back in a culdesac on the water, so on the weekend, you feel like you have your own little world. (It's so quiet, in fact, that the next-door sandwich shop is closed on weekends, and the Starbucks across the circle is closed on Sundays.) Beautiful lobby and lounge. Had a spacious corner room with a view of the water and big picture windows. Very quiet. The bathroom was huge, with a wonderful shower (big enough for two) and soaking tub. Slept better than I have in a long time on a perfect bed with very comfy bedding. Staff is professional and friendly. We had the breakfast buffet in Sou'Wester one morning--good, but limited options for this vegetarian. Menu would probably be the better way to go next time. Also did in-room dining for breakfast one morning and that was efficient, elegant and tasty. Foodies cannot miss CityZen for dinner. Yes, it's pricey. But you get what you pay for. Can't wait to stay here again!

We do believe that our location sets us apart, so we appreciate you taking the time to highlight how peaceful it is in our location, and that you also took the time to enjoy CityZen, its vegetarian offerings are the best in the area, hands down!

This was a repeat visit to the hotel as a non-resident guest. Afternoon tea is served from Thursdays to Sundays inclusive in the Empress Lounge, the main lounge off the lobby. A light airy space overlooking a small garden, it has a good mix of patrons: the odd single, ladies having tea, couples and friends meeting up for a drink. Tea costs a basic $35 plus tax with an optional $10 for a glass of Veuve Clicquot, bargain!

Tea is from a buffet and is an assortment of three open sandwiches, a chocolate dip, scones and patisserie. I like the fact you can go up as much or as little as you like, which is an aspect that seemed to have escaped some of the local patrons who insisted on piling their plates with food.

A good presentation of food, my only criticism is that there is a lack of balance with not enough savoury items and a few too many sweets ( and this despite having a sweet tooth ). Possibly extra sandwiches or a hot Asian savoury item like a spring roll, a samosa or a curry puff?

Staff and service are great, although the initial greeting and seating are a little erratic as there is no hostess station. As it was a Sunday, I did take a quick peek into Sou'Wester which does a Sunday brunch a la carte, but it was deserted at 3:00pm.

All in all, a great oasis in the middle of Washington and highly recommended.
