“fabulous collection in a beautiful setting”
Reviewed February 27, 2013

I went with a group as part of a whirlwind trip to Washington so I had limited time at Hillwood, but I would definitely go back. The estate is in the suburbs of Washington with lovely grounds (sadly obscured by rain when I was there) and the house itself is a little treasure chest of mostly French and Russian art, furniture and ceramics, beautifully displayed and worthy of a much longer inspection than I had time for. We had an excellent tour given by one of the docents, who tried not only to give us an overview but to make it more personal to her international audience by identifying pieces from their own culture - she was clearly immensely knowledgeable and full of enthusiasm for her subject. The quality of the collection was staggering and the story of Marjorie Merriweather Post has everything - entrepreneurial wealth, political connections, Hollywood glamour and philanthropy. A fascinating glimpse into another world.
The orchid collection was superb and the restaurant very good. Highly recommended.

“Awesome collection”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

This place reminds us of one of our favorite places, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. What a great collection and neat story.

The Museum is about five miles from the White House area - don't take a cab since you'll have a problem getting another one to pick you up.

The collection is awesome. The story is memorable.

“See the life of an Heiress”
Reviewed February 22, 2013

If you ever wanted to see the best money and taste could buy you should see Hillwood, the fab home of Post Cereal Heiress Marjorie Meriwether Post. WoW. It is a 1950's time warp but with Mad Men you will appreciate it. I want her live.

“A must visit”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

Although remote and difficult to access via public transportation, this beautiful house is one of the must-visits in DC. Even if you are not interested in the history of American collecting and in Russian Imperial art and history, the grounds and gardens themselves are stunning. If you have any interest in Russia and the Russian cultural heritage, or in the decorative arts and in material culture, it is an essential place to experience.

“Elegant and enchanting”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

Intimate view of Russian iconography, lavish royal jewels, jeweled eggs, and nonpareil religious vestments and chalice. Beautiful gardens.
