While the heat of DC can be interminable in the summer, one great attraction around the month of July is the blooming of the lotuses at Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens. This park is less traveled and has a quaint feel by virtue of the historic gardening structures, while still having an extensive set of grounds to wander (including some vistas that show the DC area in it's original marsh-like state). Paths are also relatively flat and wide so suitable for wheelchairs (unless there's been significant rain). The park itself isn't located in the best of neighborhoods so some attention to your whereabouts is necessary (although my family has been going for years with no problem).

The park is pleasant and even without the full seasonal glory of lilies, it was a nice outing (Mother's Day). Needs a Friends Group to keep the poison ivy cut back and add more interpretive signage along the boardwalk. Great asset!

Located in NE DC on the Anacostia River withreasonably easy access from the city.Acres of marsh and pond filled with wildlife and birds and seasonal foliage like water lillies.Very pleasant and particularly nice in spring.Well worth the trip.

I'd visited here as a kid and wanted to take my own kiddo here. As other reviewers have mentioned, this is said to be a rough neighborhood (and have had park rangers at other sites mention as such) so driving might be your best option.
Having said that, I had no idea that the middle of July was the best time to view the blooming water lilies so we just lucked upon the right time to visit. This is one of those spots where visiting earlier in the day is better....we came late in the day and some flowers had closed up. Having said that, it was still gorgeous and just drop-dead amazing. It seemed we had the place to ourselves.....except for the plants, the black snake we startled (or who startled us), the dragonflies, frogs, turtles. Well, you get the idea.
It was amazing. Definitely a must-see! Oh and they have binoculars that they'll let you borrow and a small gift shop that (thankfully for us) had bottled water for sale. The park rangers were amazing here!

This is a beautiful park to visit. It is nice all the time but must be amazing in Mid-July when all the water lilies will be blooming. The trails are nice. I recommend this park highly to all nature lovers.
The park also provide for good bird watching and nature photography.
