I visited the International Spy Museum at 9 am on a February Saturday. The museum is filled with many interesting and well-thought out interactive experiences. It covers the world of spying from the beginning of written history to the near present day. Everything from Ceasar's use of crypto-wheel to hidden cameras and Bond's car. Both real spies and imaginary ones are covered. The rooms of the museum are small, and although not crowded that cold winter morning, I could only imagine how difficult the experience would be during tourist season (spring, summer and fall). The gift shop and museum store has a great selection. I highly recommend a visit despite the $18 admission price. I did not participate in extra add-on experiences, so I cannot speak to them. A careful walk through the museum, reading most of the exhibits took 2.5 hours when it was not crowded. I suggest you, too, visit during the winter months.

Thank you so much for visiting! We appreciate your comments.

While we encourage guests to visit us any time of the year, we are at our busiest when children have time off from school (weekends, summers, holidays, spring break, etc.).

I am so glad you enjoyed the Museum. Please come back and experience Operation Spy!

Visitor from Melbourne, Australia.

Loved this museum! It was not crowded when we visited in early December 2007 so we were easily able to read all of the information and only had to wait a short time to use most of the interactive displays. The displays were well presented and provided an excellent overview of the history of spying, the ‘tools of the trade’ and how spies have been caught. Made us wonder why any country builds embassies, given that it appears that everything that goes on in them is heard by the host country!

The lighting in the room with the replica of George Washington’s letter appeared to be on either a timer or motion sensor system – either way, the lights would not remain on long enough to read the information associated with the displays, which was unfortunate.

The shop contained a wide variety of merchandise – I would recommend the CD ‘Music to Spy By’ for those who love the theme songs to James Bond movies and other spy shows. We did not do the separate ‘Operation Spy’, so can’t comment on that.

Would definitely recommend this museum.

I can't agree with the previous reviewers saying that this place was not interesting and that Operation Spy was boring. It was great fun-yes, Operation Spy is quick paced but to make it seem real, surely it has to be. We thoroughly enjoyed it and the guide was good-we also met some nice people (as you have to work in a group). The museum itself was fascinating-lots of information and very cleverly done. We would have nothing bad to say about it and would wholeheartedly recommend it.

Although it was of the few things you actually have to pay for in DC, it is worth it. The interactive areas are fun for both adults and kids. The place has a lot of information that was interesting to us.

Thanks for visiting the Spy Museum. We appreciate receiving feedback from guests and enjoy reading about guests’ experiences. The museum is multigenerational and has a little bit of everything for everyone, from interactive activities to Operation Spy, our 12 and over immersive spy experience. If you are ever in DC again, please find the time to visit us.

Thanks!

This museum is so unorganized - you wait in line to buy tickets, then you wait in line to get in at your assigned time, then you wait for 1 elevator, then you sit and watch a film and then you finally get into the museum.

Most of this waiting is done outside - so be prepared for the weather. They could have had some entertainment while you waited in line - or at least passed out hot cocoa or coffee or water.

The museum was so crowded and poorly designed that you couldn't always read what you wanted or even hear some of the films. There was some interesting stuff - but we couldn't get to any of the interactive items because it was so crowded - what a waste of time and money. I didn't see one guide/employee in the whole museum.

Do not pay extra for OPERATION SPY - it was so stupid. What a force - very confusing and dumb. The customers were supposed to be part of some spy mission - really goofy and convoluted. Do not waste your $$$$.
