Panas Gourmet Empanadas
Ranked #246 of 3,367 Restaurants in Washington DC
Certificate of Excellence
Description: Panas specializes in Latin fusion gourmet empanadas, crescent- shaped turnovers, stuffed with well seasoned combinations of meats, vegetables, spices, fruits, and sweets. Our recipes are inspired by the idea of Latin Fusion cuisine; a culinary concept based on creating new recipes by combining traditional and modern culinary techniques and mixing ingredients from different countries in the Americas. The only empanadas’ tradition we want to preserve is that empanadas a great idea and fun package for food.

We went there because my husband is from Venezuela and loves empanadas. He said these are what they refer to as pasteles, not empanadas. Still, the food was fresh and delicious and the staff was very friendly and courteous. Try the fresh juices--they are great!

Our hotel was a block away from this empanada place. We decided to give it a try and we are glad we did. The line was out the door. They have a reasonable selection and a decent lunch special. I would recommend this for lunch. They are on the small side so get at least 3 or 4.

These guys specialize in Empanadas, a Caribbean dish made with dough and whatever you can stuff inside it. The menu is designed to sample cuisines from all over Latin America, which was pretty cool if you ask me. They've got a meal deal with 3 empanadas, chips, and 2 small salsas for $6.50 which turns into $7.70 with DC's atrocious sales tax. While this is on the cheap side for the District, they should probably include a drink.

The panas are delectable. They're even baked with little initials so you can tell which flavor is which (they all look the same on the outside). Salsas are rich and I believe the chips are plantains, but not 100% sure.

Pretty small for a meal but definitely premium food and a must-visit for the Dupont Circle area.

We tried the empanadas for snack. The empanadas are small but very tasty. We went right at lunch and there was a long line. The guy at the register was having a lot of problems but no biggie. Not very many places to sit so we got them to go.
