“Simply the best accomodation in Washington”

I stay at the Swann House for government trips to Washington, and refuse to stay anywhere else.

The staff, service, comfort, and gracious hospitality are unparalleled in American lodging, and certainly at the Swann House's prices. In an age where business travel is usually forgettable, I will remember the Swann House -- fondly -- for many years to come.

Elegant inn in a quiet residential neighborhood about a 10 to 15 minute walk to DuPont Circle. Beautifully restored older home with great home cooked food. Super service. Expensive but ended up totally worth the price. We had a room downstairs with a private entrance, a fireplace and a sitting room. Absolutely gorgeous room. Even though we were there in June we didn't get to use the pool.
If you are OK with spending this kind of money I recommend the Swann House. There are no negatives. Well maybe one. After sleeping on the feather bed at the inn my wife wants to buy one for our bed.

Stayed at Swann House in late May for 3 nights as part of an east coast fly drive.

We were delighted with our stay in the Nantucket room which was 'cosy' but clean and very comfortable. My only comment would be that since this is an old house, alot of the rooms run on the same heating/air conditioning system! we couldn't shut the vent in the room as it was stuck and the fan was a little noisy sometimes and I had to put a blanket on the bed as I am always cold!

Breakfast was FANTASTIC in my opinion. A different, freshly cooked hot entree each day (loved the orange croissant french toast and breakfast burrito!) along with fresh fruit, homemade granola, yoghurt, breads, muffins, juices and coffee. Plus takeaway coffee cups were ideal as we were heading out for an early morning of sightseeing!

The inn itself is located around 20/30 mins walk from the white house - a fair stroll but we enjoy walking and found it enjoyable. On an evening we stayed locally rather than going downtown, heading to the nearby restaurants of 17th/18th street - Rosemary's Thyme was a particular favourite where we went two nights running - fantastic mezze and stonebaked pizzas and incredibly reasonable prices we thought.

The inn has complimentary internet access in the lounge, along with free bottled water for guests to take which is a thoughtful touch. In the afternoon, refreshments are served - homemade lemonade, sherry, fresh coffee and nibbles of the day! Lovely to come back to after a day in washington. There is a small outdoor pool but we didn't try it!

Overall we had a fantastic stay and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Swann House.

Visited Washington with another couple late May 2011 and stayed at the Swann House for 5 nights. We were upgraded to the Il duomo and, although the artwork in the bathroom was.....interesting, we did love the room very much. The room gets early morning sunlight so not a good choice if you like to sleep in or else pack your eye shade. Lovely home recently redecorated with some off-street parking for an additional fee. Breakfast of delicious granola, pastries, fruit, hard boiled eggs and a different special hot choice each morning. Rick was very accommodating, helping with luggage to the room and directions to several local restaurants. There was a small pool which we did not use but it looked very inviting after a warm day of site seeing. The complimentary sherry and snacks in the afternoon was much more inviting for us. The location, just a few short blocks above Dupont Circle, makes it convenient for Metro, shops and restaurants. Also cab rides to the Capital or to Georgetown were all around $11.00.

I stayed here with my husband and mum on a trip to Washington DC. Hubs and I were in 'Shanghai'd Away' a room on the lower ground floor. There was no natural daylight although there was an exit door down the corridoor to the road so we were not sub-terranean. To be honest I would not stay in this room again. I am sure it is perfect in the winter, but I felt a bit like a cave-dweller after a couple of nights! We had no idea from our room what the weather was like (scorching) and so had to go out of the room to look before getting dressed. We could find no control for the air-con and we were next to the aircon room (although there was no noise). I don't know whether this had anything to do with it but we woke up in the night freezing!! The room was very nicely done to an oriental theme with flat screen TV, en suite shower and small closet with ironing board and iron.
Mum was in Nantucket which was a lovely room.
They go the extra mile service-wise with robes and slippers in the rooms (handy for checking what the weather is doing outside!). They put bottles of water, lemonade and iced tea in the fridge for you to help yourself whenever you want to. There is tea and coffee making facilities 24/7 in a room off the lounge. Free internet in the lounge, and wi-fi (they give you a code if you have your own laptop). There's a small pool although this was too cold when we were there. Breakfast is continental with a hot option served daily. We had a gorgeous french toast orange croissant, waffle, burrito and other choices whilst we were there. It would have been ideal to have another option whcih was more protein based as I was on a lo-carb diet, but no biggy, they had hard boiled eggs.
Every evening they have a sherry and canapes hour. Part of our pre-evening entertainment was sit on the terrace with a sherry (or two!) and watch the locals with their dogs - there's a dog exercise enclosure opposite - not noisy but extremely entertaining!
The best thing we found to do if you are sightseeing is to buy a two day ticket on the open top busses. The one we did was 'hop on, hop off'. They use the old fashioned London busses and the staff are lovely, very helpful. Swann House is a 10 min walk from Dupont Circle, where there are bars and restaurants so perfect for a short evening jaunt. If you want to venture into town or for sightseeing the 'hop on hop off' stop 38 is at Dupont, so you can 'hop on' and 'hop off' wherever you want. We used to take the bus to the Willard Hotel which is where the intersection between all of the 'circle routes' that the bus takes. This saves a lot in taxi fares and we found that the taxi drivers didn't know where they were going anyway (unless you were going to a large landmark - the whitehouse, for example!!). The busses always did the same circuits and avoided the stress of not knowing where you were going to end up!
Georgetown is a quaint, slightly bohemian village within Washington. Lovely bars, restaurants and shops. A lot of people asking for money though - although they are very polite and not at all intimidating.
Hillwood house is a lovely day out if you want to get away from the city. Marjorie Merriweather Post created a lovely estate and a collection of sparkly things (faberge eggs, diamond tiarras and a wealth of other gorgeous things. Not to mention the wonderful gardens and a nice cafe and coffee lounge to take sustinance on board.
Allow a good 3 hours for a visit - taxis around $15 each way. There is a bus but it is a good mile walk both ways to the stop.
I haven't spoken about the memorials because I am sure enough has been said about those.

Recently visited Swann House for our anniversary. We live in the country and wanted something totally different. We thoroughly enjoyed walking to the nearby restaurants and attractions in a friendly neighborhood. The few little things that came up were handled by the staff in a friendly, efficient manner. The only thing I would say is that if they plan to use artificial flowers, keep them fresh-looking and updated (easy fix) especially in an area where they will be right in front of guests. Also could use a dark shade on door since light is on all night. Easy to get to and from. We will definitely return!

Room Tip: Worth paying the small extra fee for parking!

We stayed at Swann House for one night and found it a real home from home. The location was great near to the Dupont Circle and near enough the centre of Washington to be able to walk the the Mall in about 20 mins. I can not recommend the breakfast enough - I will dream of Rick's baked, apple filled French toast!
