“Don't Stay Here”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2008

We wanted to have a nice quiet vacation and we couldn’t in this NOISY HOTEL. They had a big conference at the end of our corridor; yes the same corridor where the rooms are. We could hear everything, and by this I mean since they started carrying and placing the tables, chairs etc… to the party, and of course till next day when they decided to pick up everything at 7 in the morning. Furthermore when we came back to our room to have a nice nap before dinner (of course because we couldn’t sleep in the morning) our corridor was filled with people and publicity SO we could hear every single people going in and out, complete with their opinions on the conference and cellular conversations.
The staff wasn’t nice they weren’t helpful and they didn’t care that we were having a bad time.
I definitely think that if you pay a $500 room you should be able to sleep.
DON’T GO THERE THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT THEIR EVENTS AND NOT ABOUT THEIR GUESTS.
If you are looking for a boutique hotel, this is definitely not it. Boutique means smaller with much greater service and the Monaco hotel is far from this.

We stayed at the Hotel Monaco because of the location, which is indeed terrific, and the great price we got--about 1/2 the $$ shown on Trip Advisor page. After being cautioned in reviews about room size and lower floor rooms we reserved a Monte Carlo room. When we arrived and were to be on the lower floor, we requested a 2nd floor room and there was no problem changing rooms. The room was fairly large with high ceilings, an excellent king size bed, a comfortable lounge chair, a desk with two chairs, and a very large bathroom. We used room service the first evening; it was timely and the food was quite good. The location on the 2nd floor was great, right off the elegant lobby and convenient to the complimentary coffee each morning. Our room location was very quiet and the decor and lobby of the hotel was distinctive.

But perhaps the best part of our stay was the friendly and helpful service. The staff seemed to go out of their way to help. A special thanks to Lisa Nicole for finding us a great room and leaving a lovely bottle of champagne after I told her that my wife and I were celebrating our 25th anniversary; to Rhonda for directions and tourist tips; and to the friendliest doorman we have encountered.

We have made many trips to Boston, New York, and Chicago, staying at good hotels. Our stay at the Hotel Monaco in Washington was one of our best experiences ever. We will be back. Thanks!

We stayed here in January of 2008 for 3 nights.

Fabulous location - across the street from the Verizon Center and the Portrait Gallery.

The hotel looks like a Smithsonian museum from the outside.

Pluses
Concierge was helpful prior to stay - all room requests were granted
Unique decor and atmosphere-you could choose your animal themed bathrobe
Complimentary Evening reception included wine and beer tasting
Free internet, gym
Great bed, bathrobes, amenities
One block from countless eateries including Legal Seafood, McCormicks, fast foods, etc.

Minuses
Room & closet were quite small
Front desk staff was not familiar with neighbor eateries

We stayed here with our 3 teenage children. The hotel had full details of the ages of our children when we booked. We had 1 large room for the kids but the 2 beds were only large singles so we asked for a rollaway. We were told that this was contrary to fire regulations and that our only option was to pay $200+ for another room, alternatively, they could provide blankets on the floor for one child (not a fire hazard apparently!)
They refused to refund us so that we could find another hotel. Finally they agreed to put the kids in another room with a bed, a sofa bed and a rollaway even though it was far smaller then the first room. There was no attempt to try and sort things out and they were very unhelpful.

The hotel is huge and impersonal. However it is in a good location for tourists.

Actually got a much lower price than the listed here. The whole layout of the place, from the awesome lobby to the sweet rooms is really well designed. They had many special touches, from great robes, to choosing the type of pillow you prefer. We especially loved being able to babysit a little goldfish named Hanna!! Plus, the Alexandria area is so quaint and pedestrian friendly - we almost wished we stayed in Alexandria rather than facing D.C.! We will absolutely stay here again when in the D.C. area.

  • Liked — Awesme decor and over-the-top service!
  • Disliked — We did have a big issue with a broken air conditioner that was not fully resolved and no compensation was made.

Hello Tessah5702.

Thank you for your comments. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay and were able to take in the décor, use the robes and have a little friend stay with you also. It seems you took part in the best qualities of Hotel Monaco while site seeing in the capital. I see you mentioned that you may want to stay in Old Town during your next visit. Of course we would love to have you stay with us but our sister hotel, the Hotel Monaco in Old Town Alexandria, is equally exceptional. Perhaps next time you can try out that hotel.

Thank you again and have a pleasant day!

We stayed 3 nights at this hotel. The location is good, it is withing walking distance to all major tourist attractions and there are a lot of restaurants in this area. However, we would not stay at this hotel again because it was very noisy. The house keeping staff was very loud (singing, chatting with eath other) already at 7.30 am at a Sunday morning! They did not stop until we ask them to, but it was the same the next morning again.
Check-in was ok, but when we were in our room someone from the housekeeping staff came by because she forgott to check the minibar.
The room is very small. The bed was confortable.
A big plus is the very good restaurant. Our dinner was delicious! However, there is no need to stay in this hotel just because of the restaurant, and so we will not stay at this hotel again.

Stayed 3 nights with my wife on a personal vacation. Hotel is in a great location. We were able to walk to all the sites. We upgraded rooms at check-in to a suite with 2 rooms and bathroom. Overall, it was a nice hotel, but there were just some little things that bothered us.

The sitting room was decent with a nice TV. There was a refrigerator in this room, however, it was completely full, so we had to empty everything out to be able to fit anything in. No microwave in the room, which would have been nice.

The bedroom had a queen sized bed and good sized flat panel tv. The bed was not very comfortable. The thermostat for the air conditioning did not work, so the AC ran non-stop while it was set to on, so we had to keep turning it on and off manually.

The bathroom was the best part of the room as the upgraded room included a tub with jets and a separate shower. The only suggestion would be to add steps to get in the tub, as it was very difficult to get in because had to step over the side, which was at least 3 feet tall with only a very small step.

If you stay here, make sure you don't leave anything out when you leave for the day! When we got back to our room after it being cleaned, they had thrown away the unread newspaper sitting on the desk, along with our schedule for the following 2 days and our directions to all of the places we were going.
