“4 Star - Not really - Should be a 2 and 1/2 star”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2013

Location is great. It's in the center of all sightseeing wants. Metro is immediately right across the street. But the room was small. The décor was dated. The bed was small and uncomfortable. You could hear people in the hallway very clearly. No fan in the bathroom. Made the bathroom very steamy.

Green Features: They have environment friendly practices and are adhering to them.

Hello Joe M - so glad you loved our location and walking distance to all the area attractions - we truly are in the center of it all! Next time - give one of our Monte Carlo rooms a try instead of a smallish queen bedded room - for the smallish increase in price, they really are the largest value around!
Cheers

We stayed 3 nights at the Monaco in early June 2013.
As with all Kimptons this one is a unique place.
The hotel is in an old post office built in the mid 1800s.
The rooms are very large with high ceilings and the furnishing are kind of funky.
There is a great outdoor bar in the courtyard that is very popular in the summer.
The location is central, within easy walking distance to the National Mall and museums.
The only issue was with the valet service for the car, they brought the wrong car as we were hurrying to the airport.
Overall a good experience.

Thanks for your comments Mike2030 - You picked the perfect time of year to visit with Poste Courtyard in full bloom and the DC attractions at their best. You're right our 1800's gem is a little unusual - but that's one of the things we love that you loved about us - let us know when you're coming back. (and make it soon!)

We stayed at the Monaco for three nights and had a wonderful experience. The location was great, very close to all the sites and right across the street from the Verizon Center. The character of the hotel was awesome - from the rooms to the wide hallways to the lobby. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a place with some "character."

Hello Charles C -
Character(s) - we guess we resemble that remark. Truly appreciate the kind words - and happy you appreciated the location too - we are the one and only in the center of it all here in the Penn Quarter! Come back soon!
Many thanks,

Kimpton Hotels in general are wonderful and this one in particular has a lot to like, including things you ordinarily wouldn't even think about.

The Monaco Washington is perfectly located. It is in the middle of DC only a 5-10 minute walk to the mall, across the street from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, catty-corner to the nearest Metro stop, and a very short walk to the theaters, Verizon Center, and a host of other attractions.

The hotel itself is in the old Washington Post Office and a plaque has something to the effect that the first telegraph was sent from that location. The building itself is a beautiful marble structure that just looks like an important Washington building.

The inside, like a lot of Kimpton Hotels, has modern and playful decorating. There are many decorating and architectural surprises, both in the common areas and in the rooms.

I can't speak for all the rooms, but mine appeared to have been adapted from some sort of office from the turn of the last century. It was not especially large, but it was well-decorated, quiet, and comfortable. This is a repurposed building, so the room was also had character - in a good way. I slept very well here.

The amenities are ample and amusing. They have complimentary wine from 5 to 6. They allow pets, which I like even though I leave mine at home. They give you maps with running routes, as well as a yoga mat. I have no interest in yoga, but love the fact that my hotel provides such an unusual amenity. Apparently, they also have hula hoops in the workout area, although I lacked the occasion to use one. They have basically free wi-fi (you have to sign up; but it's easy and Kimpton doesn't inundate you with spam), and it was fast and reliable. There was a power strip on the desk with ample room for many chargers.

You don't get a coffee maker in you room, but that's OK because they have excellent coffee (as well as tea, lemon water, and other offerings) in the lobby and it's a very pleasant space to spend part of your early morning. They had several newspapers available on a Saturday morning (to my recollection, the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and one of the Washington newspapers).

The Washington Monaco Hotel is an enjoyable and well-located place to stay if you find yourself in Washington.

Room Tip: Think about what you want. I was on the first floor, which was great. You might want to ask the fr...

I stayed for three nights in a double double room, sharing with my sister. Our room was located at the back of the hotel and overlooked the central courtyard. The room was a perfect size and set up for our needs.

The staff throughout our stay were friendly and made themselves available to answer any questions we may have had.

We made use of the chilled water in the lobby, afternoon cookies and evening happy hour during our stay - all nice touches to make the entire experience pleasant.

We were very satisfied with the location, being walking distance to many sights, museums and restaurants and just across the street from a Metro station. I would definitely stay again if visiting Washington DC.

Dear wwttrr_021
Where else can you get the morning& afternoon snacks and then the walking exercise to work off your treats! We're happy you chose us - and hope to see you and your Sister again soon! Make sure you take time to have lunch in that fabulous Poste Courtyard you were overlooking next time!
Cheers

Every single member of the staff and service personnel at the Monaco was cheerful, helpful, friendly, and accommodating. The lobby is very attractive; the decor is modern and shows no signs of wear.
Our room (king bed) was clean and attractive. The clock radio worked. The bathroom was well appointed, with good toiletries, but rather small.
Although my husband uses a walker, no one helped us take our luggage to our room, and the directions on how to get to it were not as clear as they might have been.
Overall, the experience was not quite that of a top-quality luxury hotel.
We only spent one night at the Monaco, so perhaps our experience was incomplete.

Dear emrk,
After so many great thoughts and details - I was disappointed too that we missed the boat on two simple things. Hopefully you and your husband will be back again soon! We have a fantastic Red White & Boom rate coming up for July that might be just the ticket for a longer stay so we can convince you the great things you observed are not just temporary fireworks!
Cheers

We stayed in the Monte Carlo room during our visit over Memorial Day Weekend. The room was large, very clean, and comfortable. The hotel itself is beautiful. The staff is amazing, and very helpful.

The location of this hotel was perfect. It was within walking distance to all the sights, and the Metro station. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

The only drawback was that our "first floor" room was actually in the basement. You have to keep your curtains drawn, as there is a lot of foot traffic along the side of the building.
