we stayed at this hotel for 5 nights and found it to be in a great location with friendly and helpful staff. we were able to walk/run almost everywhere and took the metro a few times to travel a bit further. the room was a bit small for a "luxury" room, but we were still able to fit in a roll-away for our daughter. road noise was not a factor, but it would have been nice to have a room on a higher floor. for the price we paid, we felt it was a great value for the location. we would stay here again when we return to d.c.

The people are what sets this property apart. Nicely situated in city and comfortable digs, but every time I needed something, an answer to a transpo question, help in their business center... they were right there. Ask for an upper floor room as they are always quieter.

This is one of my favorite hotels in DC. Sofitel is the top of the line brand of the Accor chain in France. Over there, Sofitel is the five star level and is tremendously expensive. In DC and Chicago, the 2 I have stayed in, it has been amazingly affordable for top notch service. i love the central location, quality of the rooms and bathrooms. i also love the beige coling--very calming and very sophisticated

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the street. the building across is like a wedding cake--very ornate details on...

This is in so many ways a typical Sofitel – nice rooms, clean and well stocked bathrooms and attractive public spaces but I was surprised by some aspects of it.

We arrived at around 9pm and our reservation was dealt with quickly by a really charming front desk person. She confirmed all the details as booked and took time to explain the hotel facilities. First impression - the reception area, the bar, the business centre and the concierge desk are all very small which surprised me – it’s a large hotel with I think around 15 floors of rooms but the public area is very small indeed – although beautifully furnished and glossy.

The room (5th floor) overlooked the street below which is one block from the White House. It had a comfortable king sized bed, large work desk and ergonomic chair plus one other small table and armchair (it really needed another armchair) The bathroom was standard Sofitel – clean and well stocked although no orchid and no candle like some others. Hotels of this standard usually offer 3 large bath towels but we had two large towels plus two robes and slippers. Toiletries are the standard Lanvin range (quite highly scented so take your own if you’ve got sensitive skin). Housekeeping was good but we returned with some bags one day and the room still wasn’t cleaned by around 3.30pm - which I think is too late.

The TV was large and had lots of channels although the picture quality wasn’t good but we only needed it to catch up on the weather so not a big problem. Wi-fi wasn’t included in the room rate but it was offered free at check in thanks to our A-Club loyalty card. Wi-fi speeds weren’t bad but they weren’t superfast either – if you were using it for work you may struggle.

I can see that others have mentioned the breakfast offering and indeed this was the worst aspect of the stay. We decided to have breakfast at the hotel simply as it was the most convenient option. In truth this was a mistake. The seating is limited (maybe 20 tables at most which means you have to wait at busy times) and the service is painfully slow and erratic. It took an age to get served, a long time for the food to arrive and even longer to get another drink.

On the first day we each had a bowl of fruit, eggs benedict (potatoes were cold) and a coffee and orange juice. The bill, which had service already added (“for your convenience”), came to $85 ($15 for the eggs, £7 for the coffee, $6 for the juice etc etc) Definitely not worth it. We tried again on the 3rd morning of our stay as it was raining outside and we didn’t want to wander around finding somewhere to eat but the waiting time was even longer and the American breakfast was disappointing – the scrambled eggs were horrible. I think it’s best to do some research before you go and find nearby alternatives. The restaurant really lets the place down.

Check out was a breeze and the bill was correct. Overall it’s a solid Sofitel and if you can get a good rate the central location (McPherson metro stop is a short walk away) is really convenient. Just look elsewhere to eat!

One more thing - although tea and coffee are available in the bar each morning it is INCONVENIENT for your guests to have to go and get it! Its time to put tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms and join the 21st century....

Room Tip: "City view" means a view of a nondescript street - don't bother spending extra money o...

Sofitel is known as a terrific chain, and their DC location is a jewel. We're locals, but splurged on a night on the town at the DC Sofitel to celebrate the wife' birthday (happens to be on Christmas). Despite the holiday, service was outstanding; a beautiful dessert platter awaited us, welcoming my wife and celebrating her birthday. Breakfast the next morning included a champagne and dessert on the house, as the celebration continued.

Locationwise, it cannot be beaten. Just a few steps from the White House and the Mall, it's in a great spot for tourists eager to experience DC.

And the rooms! More like a suite, with a small entrance lobby, a sitting area with ample light and comfy armchairs, a wonderful king bed with A-1 linens and bedding, a fabulous shower, separate tub and tiled bathroom. Comfy bathrobes, plush towels. When a hotel puts a BOSE player next to the bed (easy to plug in your IPod or use the CD player), you know they have not scrimped in any way. A large flat screen TV with all of the premium channels is there. Decorations were lovely, from the wall prints to the special glasses and pitchers provided.

And light, light, light from the windows, showing beautiful views of the city.

The staff was wonderful and helpful. Highly, highly recommended.
