This is a French flagged property with plenty of French speaking employees that all make you feel at home (They also all speak English). I took 6 family member (in their mid twenties) plus my wife and booked 3 rooms. The rooms were large and well appointed - the only negative is there isn't enough room for clothes to put in drawers or hand up things. The hotel staff and location compensate for that many times over. It is 4-5 blocks from the Capital mall, Washington Monument and all the museums etc. There are plenty of small cafe's a block away if you don't want Hotel food in the morning or you can go to them for lunch; there also are some quit nice resturants nearby. The metro is only 1 block away; so as you can see this hotel and it's location offers an awful lot for a visitor and we will stay there again when we come back. Unless your looking for the Ritz or a 4 Seasons I (WE) really recommend this property.

Husband and I dropped off our son (1 of 4 children) at GW . We were looking for a good dinner and a peaceful night in a good hotel.
Sofitel was ok....our view was the other side of the hotel. I should have asked for a good view. When I mentioned it at checkout, the attendant apologized but said I received upgraded linens. Well, maybe on the bed but not in the bath. Lets just say the towels were over washed and thin.
We had cocktails outside in front of hotel. Service was good but they just could not get the martini for my husband right...the first one had a chip in glass.
Over all the price for the room was a bit much.

Thank you for your feedback. As I am sure you noticed, we are a favorite for families dropping children off a the several local universities. I am sorry you did not find your stay to be entirely satisfactory however. If you prefer a view, we have lovely luxury king rooms that face outwards towards the street. Maybe next time you can stay longer with us, and I am sure you will enjoy!

My husband and I stayed at the Sofitel Washington DC for 5 nights in August 2013. The location of this hotel is perfect and the rooms are SO quiet! It is really within walking distance to most everything. The breakfasts are delicious too - the highlight being the basket of French pastries. The downside of our stay is that our room was supposed to be non-smoking, but clearly someone previous had smoked in the room so the room had a musty cigarette smell that did not dissipate the entire 5 night stay. Also, the rooms that face the "courtyard" really face the other wing of the hotel about 20 feet away so when you look out the window you are staring into a brick wall with a bunch of windows - not so nice or private. :-( Nevertheless, everything else was lovely and made up for those imperfections.

Thank you for choosing Sofitel for your summer vacation in Washington D.C. I am happy to know you enjoyed your overall experience with us, but I am terribly sorry to hear that your room was not 100% satisfactory. As you mentioned, like all properties in D.C., the entire hotel is a non-smoking. We have a very strict policy and in the rare case that we suspect smoking in a room, it will be deep cleaned and thoroughly inspected before being occupied again. Next time you visit, if there is something less than perfect, please make sure to bring it to our attention and we would be happy to find you a different room. We want you to be entirely comfortable!

Anna

The Sofitel in DC is a favorite of ours, and we have been consistent customers for 11 years. Since we were staying there as the first leg of a three week vacation, it seemed a good time to update our review of a few years ago.

We are a family of three and stop here often. It is hard to identify another hotel in DC that comes near to consistently performing across the entire food, lodging and business entertainment spectrum, and I am convinced that it is the presence of staff that have been here year after year that makes it so good, including some of the best hotel managers we have ever encountered. Our stay was in late July, and we occupied an executive room on the 8th floor that had a view toward Lafayette Square.

On entering this hotel you never, ever miss being greeted by a very friendly and competent door and concierge staff. They know the property and neighborhood well, and quickly whisk you into a stylish lobby with deep colors reflecting a 30's-style French salon. Every week Sofitel installs a new, large flower arrangement in the lobby that always seems to feature a changing mass of colors. The building is an adaption of an art-deco inspired office building from the 20's, so the bones of the building are a nice canvass for the Sofitel French-style decor. Check-in was a breeze, with smiles all around.

The room was in pristine condition in every respect, and loaded-up with upscale French toiletries, robes and slippers. The staff had put one of the most comfortable roll-in beds I have ever seen for our daughter, along with some simple toys and children's soap and shampoo. The bed arrangement was European, with plenty of pillows and fluffy down blankets. As a bonus, there were French television stations to prepare us for our flight to Paris the next day. We headed down for lunch in LeBar, which features a nice "express lunch" deal. The soup was a standout, along with the small French-style sandwiches. They do their own baking here, and the French bread and pastries are fun to eat. Later in the afternoon we had a "bon voyage" party with several friends on the front patio of the property -- which is one of the best features of this hotel. The patio includes two large sections, including one attached to LeBar that serves casual food and drinks, and which has become over the years one of the most popular watering spots for the White House and business crowds. The other section is an extension of the dining room named "Ici". Wherever the World Bank or similar international organizations have meetings in DC, the patio (and the entire Hotel for that matter) becomes one of the principal European delegate "hang outs", which is always interesting to watch. In any case, we had a great time entertaining our friends on the patio and lounging around on very comfortable outdoor furniture. That night we had dinner on the dining room side of the patio. Ici is a great restaurant for DC. It is an upscale French-style bistro that perfectly combines informality with a selection of food ranging from authentic steak frites up to top-level French cuisine. The wine and drink list (including a very nice selection of per-glass wines and champagnes) is far beyond what you would expect for a hotel this sixe, and even somewhat underpriced. My wife and daughter chose traditional French, and I went for a great Moroccan dish -- all prepared using local and fresh ingredients.

In the morning I worked-out in the nice fitness facility, caught up on recent world news with complimentary coffee and newspapers in LeBar, and had a generous breakfast with the family in Ici. That afternoon we took a car to Dulles and a flight to Paris for our next leg of the trip.

I can only say that this hotel is a real jewel for DC. You cannot go wrong coming here for either family or business reasons. I have entertained clients here successfully for over a decade for lunch, drinks or dinner, and it has always been a success. I agree with all the other reviewers with regard to the convenience of the location. Very proximate to the White House and museum areas, and extremely safe due to the saturation of law enforcement in the area. For those of you coming to DC for a special trip, don’t fall victim to choosing the very cheapest place to stay. There is just not much logic to coming to this city and eating hot dogs in the local Hilton.

Finally, despite the top shape this property is in, I was informed that all interior spaces are going to be renovated over the next year. It is nice to know that this hotel intends to continue leading the local market.

Room Tip: I have stayed in most of the room options here. I think the executigve rooms are a great value for...

We are a family of 4 who shared 2 double beds, room was plenty big enough for our 3 nights. Staff were polite and friendly and everything was fine. Only downside was our room looked out onto the walls of another building, but that wasn't a worry - would recommend and would use again.

Have stayed at different Sofitels in the US and Europe and never got so many bright smiles as in D.C! The location of the hotel is perfect, we had a very nice room, spacious, fantastic Sofibed as usual but with even better pillows than at some other Sofitels, very tasteful and relaxing bar. We didn't get a very good deal price-wise but enjoyed every minute of our stay.
