The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial was built since I moved away from DC. So, it was one of my priorities when I returned. Each Washington memorial is unique. The Washington Monument soars; the Jefferson Memorial has the architecture; the Lincoln Memorial has sculpture; and the war memorials beckon the appreciation for sacrifice.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial filled me with humility and inspiration. A sculpture of MLK, Jr. with a quote from the "I Have a Dream" speech —"Out of the Mountain of Despair, a Stone of Hope"—the quotation that serves as the basis for the monument's design that appears to have slid out of a stone wall.
The greatness of this man is reflected in the 14 quotes on that inscription wall. I couldn't help but think what a wonderful world we would have if everyone held his beliefs.More
