Anyone who grew up in the civil rights era, attended the March on Washington, on Aug. 28, 1963, or just appreciated Dr. King's sacrifices will be inspired by this memorial. Select quotes from Dr. King's speeches line the outside corridor wall hi-lighting his enormous statue. The memorial is open late & at 11:00 PM plenty of people where there to enjoy this experience.

Beware, the lack if free parking is a major problem & parking garages are not close by, but it is still worth the visit.

I absolutely LOVED this monument. While we were there, a large group of 25+ Navy Seamen were there in full uniform. They stood in front of the monument at the request of all of us there and they were stuck for a long time as everyone took pictures. Anyway, it didn't really have anything to do with the monument or memorial, but it added to an already amazing place. On another note, we saw a live fox run through the monument and into some bushes in the middle of it. Cool stuff.

Another DC memorial worth a visit. The most memorable thing are all the great quotes carved in the walls on either side of MLK. The one odd thing is that MLK is gazing across the tidal basin towards Jefferson- a slaveholder.

I am a glad to see MLK honored in this way it has been a long time coming! However, as many before me have pointed out the stone work surrounding his likeness is so smooth and angular that it has the effect of seeming fake. It is very clear what the intention was, but the sculpture of Dr. King's likeness does not look as though it was wrested from the stone so much as it looks to have been smoothly cut. The notion of struggle is somehow lost without jagged edges on the sides.

This having been said, go see it for your self it is massive and moving all the same.

When you see this Memorial you are in awe of Dr Kings words. They are all over the place. The way they designed this Memorial is wonderful. I loved walking through it and reading his words. I wonder what would have happened if he had been allowed to live. An amazing man. He looks out over the river towards the Jefferson Memorial. A must see.
