“Somewhat of a disappointment”
Reviewed November 28, 2011

After all the hype of this monument, I found it somewhat disappointing.

It seemed to stand out like a sore thumb, the overly white sculpture was less than impressive. Maybe in time if the rock sculpture developes some patina.

I will say I enjoyed reading the wall around the sculpture and find Dr. King so very inspiring.

All said this was the least impressive of all the monuments we visited, but still should see.

“Too much Leninesque”
Reviewed November 28, 2011

Like the FDR memorial, this is mainly a memorial wall of citations from King speeches. The emerging statue of King reminds one of grandiose statues of Lenin in Russia rather than the emotional appeal that King had to his listeners. The "mountain of despair" is cheesy and unremarkable. The book store is worth a visit although typical of most of the book stores associated with the monuments.

“Must see in DC”
Reviewed November 28, 2011

Great stop, great location (near the FDR, Jefferson, & Lincoln memorial), and great site. I loved all the quotes on the wall, and it was great seeing everyone walk around reading them. The memorial itself was really interesting, and designed very well. Definitely recommended to stop while you're making the tour rounds in DC!
